I am not a yearling buyer anymore, but I go to every sale and look at countless yearlings.....bec ause you never know when an opportunity appears. I also look because I want to know, see, be familiar with pedigrees, family, siblings, and so on. Even though I buy horses that are already racing, my due diligence starts before the sale, goes right up to the sale, and straight through while they train down and hit the track. I think we will see more of the same from last year. Very, very strong very high end, top 5%, strong next tier, and a flat middle market. Sure the #'s will be up, but that's not always completely legit.

It is kind of entertaining, and a bit scary as well, LOL. First, the t-bred mega-partnerships are starting to become more common. Also, several of the breeders are staying in for a piece as well. Second, for the select few top-priced yearlings, we are seeing the prices creep up. Legit or not, it's happening. Not only are the top 10 highest priced yearlings ever sold north of $500,000, it's actually more than even the top 20! Yes, people can scream tax law, stock market, reinvestment, and so on, yeah, we all get that. But the highest end of the game as become so distorted that the #'s are just nonsensical. It trickles into the racehorse market as well. Crazy numbers. Expenses are up, horse prices are up, and at that end of the market, purses are down! Yeah, that makes sense. LOL.

  • dougie: I think that people should applaud anyone interested in the welfare of horses. Carriage or racing horses. To this day, I've never understood the venom spewed against a guy who seems to want to clean up racing. Some might question his motive for his advocacy. But why would anyone care if the result benefits the horses? If you attack the "messenger' in a cause, shouldn't the detractors have a valid reason why they attack him. Or is it only personable. I never met Mike. But I think his wanting to do the right thing is admirable.
