Agree with Sweet 100%.  The horse was flat out empty and Dexter realized it.  There is a reason why the expression exists about "beating a dead horse."  Melander may have sensed the horse was not right or flat but decided to race him anyway.. but he doesn't seem like the kind of trainer who would knowingly cheapen a $20mm+ horse like Apex.

It's interesting that you say that JT. I had a friend named John Conlon who only bet to show. He spent his afternoons at Calder in Florida looking for a horse to pay $3.80-$4.20 in the show spot. Every day he walked in with a few hundred looking for that solid bet. One day a trainer gave him his horse. Told him he might not win, but he would be "in the number". My friend John bet $200 on him to show. Longshot got up for show and paid $9.60. I never saw a guy happier. He bought me a sandwich and a double shot cuban coffee.
