FYI...Most of the cheaters that don't use cobalt, EPO, baking soda, or synthetic opioids are using potassium bicarbonate.

while it is used to milkshake race horses-it can cause hyperkalemia- a dangerous high level of potassium

that is why sodium bicarb is the preferred choice-it flushes out of the system much more quickly and is much less dangerous for the horse

sad that these poor horses get a tube jammed down their esophagus--very dangerous way to deliver

These trainers don’t care. It’s all about money. Win as many races as possible if horse dies just get another one and do the same. Like I’ve said before where are Joe bongiorno horses he had 2 yrs ago….. I’ll bet you 70% of them are dead. Same with Burke takter and the list goes on the commissions should investigate and go to their barns with the hundreds of horses these top trainers had and say where are these horses

totally agree

there should be some accountability

we have heard Surick mention the "Allard death camp"

Burke has had hundreds and hundreds of horses over the years that simply disappear and no one says a word

I would imagine more than a few are sold for horse meat in canada-but I have no idea how the kill pens and that side of the business operates

if Burke can rake in tens of millions every year in purses then he should be able to afford some after care for all the horses who don't take to "his program"

So the black box for TCO2 doesn’t pick up the potassium bicarbonate?  I thought it measures all bicarbonate.

Of course it does but the level you can get away with works better if it is potassium bicarbonate.

Potassium bicarbonate (KHCO₃) is not a common performance-enhancing agent in equine sports, and there is no established, widely accepted test protocol for detecting it in racing horses. Unlike sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate does not produce the same predictable blood gas changes, and its effects on pH and electrolyte balance are less studied in horses. This lack of a standardized detection method means that potassium bicarbonate is not typically monitored in the same way as sodium bicarbonate.

Why sodium bicarbonate is banned:
Detection: In horses, studies show that NaHCO₃ administration increases blood pH, HCO₃⁻, BE, and Na⁺, while lowering K⁺ and Ca²⁺

These changes can be measured in blood samples.
Regulation: Most racing bodies prohibit NaHCO₃ use close to competition due to its performance-enhancing potential and detectability.
Potassium bicarbonate in racing:
Not banned in the same way: Because there is no reliable, standardized test for KHCO₃, it is not routinely monitored in racing.

Possible performance effects: In theory, KHCO₃ could buffer acid similarly to NaHCO₃, but potassium is a major intracellular electrolyte, so large doses could disrupt nerve and muscle function. This makes it less likely to be used intentionally in racing.

Detection challenges: Without a validated analytical method, potassium bicarbonate would be difficult to detect in blood or urine samples.

In summary, sodium bicarbonate has a well-established test in blood gas analysis, while potassium bicarbonate does not, making it harder to detect and less likely to be regulated in the same way.

DINGUS and MIKE CAMPBELL--mean well--but have been given bad information.

Here are the facts: When a horse is given potassium bicarbonate KHCO3, the compound dissolves into potassium K and bicarbonate HCO3.

Testing laboratories measure the total concentration of dissolved bicarbonate and carbon dioxide TCO2

ANY alkalizing agent that spikes blood bicarbonate levels—whether paired with sodium or potassium—will trigger a positive test if it exceeds the regulatory threshold (typically 36 or 37 mmol/L).

It Produces Predictable Blood Gas Changes: Bicarbonate ions HCO3 act as a metabolic buffer against lactic acid regardless of the attached cation.

Administering potassium bicarbonate will ABSOLUTELY cause a predictable increase in blood pH, base excess, and TCO2.

Potassium Is Highly Dangerous: Potassium bicarbonate is not a secret loophole; it is rarely used because spiking a horse’s potassium levels is dangerous. Excess potassium in the bloodstream (hyperkalemia) rapidly disrupts cardiac electrical conduction, which can cause severe muscle tremors, heart arrhythmias, or fatal cardiac arrest.
