Vern Crank was a first-class prick. Once at Brandywine in the post parade a friend of mine and I asked him politely how old he was, his response, old enough to kick your fucking ass.

sadly ironic that Vern Crank--who drove a very popular  Town Drunk-was run over and killed by a drunk driver while walking his dog

Crank had a trailer at Winterset Farms and hit the bottle pretty good himself.
Town Drunk was a very good horse but was lazy, so Crank used to beat the crap out of him with the whip to keep his mind on business and it worked.

I attended Brandywine back in those days--usually Crank would rock somewhat in the stretch but it wasn't nearly as exaggerated compared to what JB does

sure many rock once or twice in deep stretch at times--only this kid is rocking for the entire length of the stretch if not earlier .

he shows no finesse and looks foolish

The driver who used to rock the bike the most was Keith Crawford, to the point where he was almost lying flat on his back in the sulky.
