Its a nice trip down memory lane for New Yorkers.
Being that it was written by a former employee, it focuses on how they got screwed.
I wish it would have reviewed the incompetent political patronage appointees who mismanaged it.
And also how it ultimately led to the demise of fans no longer attending live racing at the tracks.

I lived it.

From the early 80's to early 2000's.

There was some NY OTB's that operated out of nice restaurants from NYC the city to Rockland County (Mt. Fuji).  At those you received track prices.

Where as the rest were complete and utter shit holes.

Placing your bets through 6 inches of bullet proof glass until self service.

The stench of cigarettes and booze could make a smoking drinking alcoholic barf.  Some OTB's only had sound and no video.

You placed your bets and went home you called a results line.

The tellers were ok, I dated a couple of them.

How the F do you F up - gambling.  The entire experience outside the restaurants which came later on was to treat gamblers like low life scumbags.  Filthy, disgusting places generally with no toilets, thankfully  ngc3

NY OTB's that partook in the surcharge (@ 5%) on winning tickets, was above the track take out.  F'ing complete rip-off.

Glad they're dead, the tracks and bookies were a better experience, fair and equitable to the winner!  ;D

A interesting documentary. I spent many a day hanging out in the OTB on Rockaway Parkway (Exit 13 on the Belt) with my dad (Rest In Peace) and some friends. A donut place was next door so when OTB got crowded we'd sit and "dope out" the form while having a chocolate glazed. Some great memories. Sadly mismanagement and political patronage doomed it. But for many horseplayers Howie "The Horse" Samuels was a legend. But as with many things in NYC, gone but never forgotten.

Nothing better for the bettor than the old OTB Surcharge.

I grew up in Manhattan with a NYC OTB on my block....only day of the year it was acceptable for the masses to actually go in there was Kentucky Derby Day. The line would be out the door with "regular" looking people.

When I was old enough to bet I traveled a mile away to go a different OTB because I was embarrassed to have one of my neighbors seeing me going in or coming out.
