here is a great Lou Holtz story from the 70s.....

Lou Holtz suspended three key Arkansas players—starting running backs Ben Cowins and Michael Forrest, and receiver Donny Bobo—just before the 1978 Orange Bowl for disciplinary reasons, specifically breaking curfew and a dorm room incident involving a female student. Despite this, Arkansas upset No. 1 Oklahoma 31-6.
Key details regarding the suspension include:

The Incident: The players were suspended after police visited their dormitory room where a female student was present.

Impact: The suspended players accounted for a significant portion of the team's total yards that season.

Result: Despite the suspensions and being 18-point underdogs, the team, led by backup player Roland Sales, defeated Oklahoma 31-6 in the 1978 Orange Bowl.

Some more great Lou Holtz stories. The University of Minnesota's football program faced significant NCAA penalties, including a bowl ban and probation, following investigations into violations that occurred during Holtz's tenure (84-85). Improper tutoring, extra benefits, and improper recruiting which occurred while Holtz was head coach. The university of Notre Dame was placed on two years' probation in December 1999, for violations that occurred during Holtz's tenure at Notre Dame. A bookkeeper provided improper benefits to football players, and that the coaching staff failed to take prompt action upon learning of these actions.  The university of South Carolina football program was placed on three years' probation by the NCAA in November 2005, following violations that occurred during Holtz's tenure (1999-2004). The NCAA found five major violations, primarily involving improper tutoring of student athletes, and mandatory off-season workouts. This was part of a pattern, as Bleacher Report noted Holtz left several programs NC State, Minnesota, Arkansas, Notre Dame, and South Carolina that subsequently faced NCAA probation.

     Sincerely, Silent One

Holtz's lone foray into the professional ranks began when he was appointed as head coach of the New York Jets on February 10, 1976. Holtz resigned ten months later on December 9 with the Jets at 3–10 and one game remaining in the 1976 season. Upon his departure, he lamented, "God did not put Lou Holtz on this earth to coach in the pros."
