I believe the following are factors:
1. There is far more wind resistance to the 1st over in a SB race compared to a TB ... a la NASCAR
2. 1st over in a TB race, just off the pace, replicates training works. It is the racing position most favorable and they are trained for it.
3. More SB races are won wire to wire than 20-30 years ago. They don't stop on the front end as frequently now, so EVERY other spot seems worse now, not just the 1st overs.
4. The passing lane effects pace dynamics differently than back in the day. Q's going Fast/Slow/Slow/Fast has always been but it's more pronounced now and that adds to the frontrunner advantag

Then explain the horse cutting the mile obviously uncovered. Aren't you contradicting your own statement? Add in the fact that horses burst off second over because they do in fact enjoy a 'draft' that the horse on the front or first up doesn't. Also, what about track size? I don't see any t-breds racing on a half where first up or parked is by far the toughest in harness racing. The additional distance on short tracks doesn't come into play? And it's not just the width of a horse like in the flats. Please clarify this AND explain why you are scared to death of me....sissy boy.

Yonkers today drives like the Yonkers of old, however when the first purse spike from the casino cash, from those dead ass purses, the first over move was the winning one, and trainers were ready and the drivers executed it well for quite sometime.

The Nascar effect is simple. Watch and see when a car directly behind the leader pulls out '1st over' ... there is a clear effect. You don't believe it, IDC.

Different size tracks? ... what about them. On 5/8ths, outer flow (2+ outside) started at/before 3/8. Now it forms later. jmmvhmfo. You also now see near zero pocket horses pull at the 1/2 on short tracks. 3/5 shots now stay in and either follow Less likely to stop leaders or wait for the pass lane. They now nearly always get out/pass on the inside. If you were at the track and a 3/5 pocket stayed in at the half, you'd hear the crowd moan and cry fix.

2nd over on 1/2s is now far less likely to win than 20-30 years ago.

Which Yonkers?  The one with the now gone passing lane?  The one with the untimed start with another 50 yds (or whatever it was/is)?

These things affect pace/trip greatly. Add to it that horses 'just don't stop.'
