Sept Trivia
« on: August 31, 2025, 10:25:47 PM »
Laurel Racetrack early 70's.
Clint Hodgins or Harold Story.
I can't remember which one.
Both characters of that era.
A rainy rainy night.'
Clint or Harold warmed up their horse wearing an all black rain coat. He gets called in by the paddock judge and told that he needed disdinguishing colors to race. Not an all black rain coat.
Clint or Harold went straight to the State Vets office.
What did he ask for?
What did he do with what he asked for?

Pretty sure it was Story looking for gauze or adhesive tape.

Yes white adhesive tape.
Now what did he do with it?

Made a white x
"Right Church, Wrong Pew".
He had the groom wrap a couple bans of the white tape around each arm, a couple bans around his chest, and over each shoulder.
There you go, Disdinguishing Colors, and everyone is happy.

What Major League Baseball Pitcher (1986-2003) went under the stable name "Three Up-Three Down Stable"?
Horses he raised he named after baseball players.
He trained horses for a short time,  and drove in a few races.

Harold Story was a real character. I remember when they made it mandatory to wear glasses while driving. Story never wanted to so he just wore the frames and took out the lenses. I also remember at Green Mountain Park he came out in the post parade with his pet monkey riding on the horses back. Fun times back then.

Right you are.
Can you name any of his baseball related named horses and who they were named after?

War Nickel, a very nice open handicap trotter he had at the BigY.  Trying to remember the other two, who ever got the 6 or 7 of the 6,7,8 post left first and usually won.  Maybe Covert Action, Schnittker's horse was one of them.  Those were the fucking days, almost 40 years ago!
