Today's Head Scratcher
« on: August 25, 2025, 02:54:03 PM »
Here’s a bit of a head scratcher.

Monday, September 25
Saratoga Harness race 6, 7 horse field
The three favorites finished in the money at odds of 2-1, 5-2 and 1-1.

Normally you would expect very low show prices. In this seven horse field however the show prices were $6.30, $7.50 and $4.30. How is this possible?

Apparently some astute handicapper decided to bet $1,000 to show on #6, Southwind Banshee (33-1). Southwind Banshee had $98 to win bet on him, $51 to place and $1,019 to show, which was almost 2/3 of the entire show pool.

The driver, first drive on Southwind Banshee in at least the last eight starts was Peter Gerry, with a UDR of .090. By the way the horse stayed flat but finished last.

All reasonable explanations are appreciated.

Offshore betting manipulation. They bet 1000 on a horse that has no chance to show then bet 10000 offshore to show on the obvious choice and get paid track price. I think there was a thread about this last week too. Its a great idea until you get caught

Last week, this was successfully pulled off at least twice at Northville, as discussed in another post.

You wouldn't believe how many people hit the wrong track and bet the right race & numbers, just the wrong track...
It's a great game, if you have the means to play

It doesn't hold weight when people are only doing something out of spite, after being kicked out & having nowhere to go.

please

this was pool manipulation and it is becoming more common with the smaller pools every year

I have also heard "some drunk owner" bet his horse ngc3

please

For us in Canada...
For example, Bet365 off shore ponies wired into Ontario HPI pool so there is no screwing around there..but im SURE its in other spots

That has been known to happen, but not in this case. Definitely pool manipulation.Betw een the CAW and this, some of these smaller tracks are really getting unplayable. The last month or so you could really notice it at Finger Lakes. I won't play there this week and I didn't last either.

is it illegal?
Does an on track bet like that get flagged?
Is anyone paying attention?

This has been going on for decades.  Nothing new, astute bettors look for it and can capitalize on it

There is no way for anyone to look for it. The large dump show bet comes in late nobody has the chnace to see ut and bet accordingly. You think these people advertise the bet early? GTFO

You can think that but you're wrong. Some times they're late but many times the show bet is posted with plenty of time to place bets. I've caught many of them.
