Aug. Trivia
« on: August 10, 2025, 10:16:59 AM »
We have all heard
"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink", but can you teach a horse to crap every time in a designated spot in their stall?
If so How?

Here is a trivia question that brings back memories for me.....

Nihilator had 35 wins in 38 career races

can you name the three horses who won those races that he lost?

one is obvious-the other two-not so much

Mikeyo should surely get this

On a like note.
What horse beat Nihilator, but did not win the race, and then stood in IL. to change the color of IL. racing?

Marauder is the only possible answer

Om my lunch break.. one for sure is Dragons Lair when he was 2 his only loss that year. My other guesses would be Maurader and Pershing Square

Are you sure?
Did Marauder ever stand in IL.?
How could Marauder change the color of IL.racing?
A very good guess,but wrong.

you nailed 2 of 3 tmbz1

Marauder did beat Nihilator at The Meadows

the 3rd one is very obscure --but I recall it vividly

I can provide a hint--the horse was a 50/1 shot driven by Ron Waples

I am not sure--it is all a blur

I guessed Marauder because only 3 horses beat Nihilator and Dragons Lair wasnt a great sire

my other guess is the answer to my trivia question and it could be him but I don't think he was

ok I cheated

it was Broadway Express who barely nipped Nihilator for 2nd money in the Dragons Lair race

I was wrong

Marauder did beat Nihilator at The Meadows and just nipped him for 2nd in his other loss there --so technically Marauder finished ahead of Nihilator 2x...which is pretty incredible

Think back to The Meadows Breeders Crown Final.
Are you sure Marauder just nipped Nikilator for second?
Might it not have been a horse of a different color?

Yes Broadway Express.
He was roan in color.
All his first adds touted that "Broadway will change the color of IL. racing.
Many of his foals were roan so he did just that, and there were many of them.
A Broadway from an Albatross mare was like money in the bank.

Here is a little Jeff Mallet story.
Dragons Lair's driver.
Atlantic City Race Course.
Early 70's.
Jeff hears some of us talking about going to the shores on Sundays.
Jeff asks if he can go along.
I say "Sure I will pick you up at your barn 10:00 Sunday morning".
Sunday morning I drive up.
Sidney (The Dad) comes out.
"I don't think Jeffery should go with you boys today".

I have no knowledge about Jeff, but reportedly has was a prick and wasn't liked by the entire backstretch

they did say those same folks wanted him to beat Nihilator and he trained him very hard and for two heats, whereas Haughton pretty much took it easy on Nihilator

upon watching the replay--Pershing Square could have made life much tougher on Mallet in the first 3/8ths of a mile
