Correct!!

And he has to deal with invaders from other tracks (Yonkers, Saratoga, and Pocono) that fit classes that take $$$ away from the locals too!

Not so sure about that, John.  There are usually purse caps on most of their races, preventing horses from other Tracks from getting in.  Unless they enter as claimers, and risk getting claimed.

Ya know I remember reading about it then. It was surreal, because everyone was freaking out and we were all wondering what tracks are going to be open. Thank goodness for Will Rogers Downs!

Turns out though he was Covid-19 patient ZERO in NJ, 3/10/20, but I believe you're correct about the reporting then.

Covid-19 patient ZERO (and survivor) for the US...

or maybe this one, it's disputed...

March 2 2020 I was in the owners room and Faraldo and Brennan were walking around talking to us. I wound up with COVID-19, that original strain, 3 days later and had fever for 3 days and it passed. I did not feel back to myself for another 10 days. Brennan died a week later.  I STILL have the NATURAL antibodies to Covid's original strain 5 years later, so Fauci was full of it when he said NATURAL immunity would not last but vaccines were better! My sense of taste and smell is STILL not 100% as I can eat spoonfuls of horse radish and it does NOT affect my nose at all thanks to the original strain.  If you have NATURAL immunity from the ORIGINAL strain it looks like it was the best one to have to protect you long term, which was not the case getting immunity from the weaker variants.

This is a story Phil Langley told several years ago at a banquet.
It tells of his first job interview at Sportsman's Park. I forget who he said was in charge then so I will just say the boss.
Phil says
"I go in the office to get any job I can get.
I tell the boss I will do anything".
He says "Sorry kid we are full up".
I say "But I will take any job".
Again he says "Sorry kid".
I turn around to walk out and say under my breath "Well I will be a SOB" The boss says "Wait kid why didn't you tell me you wanted to be The Race Secretary".
I am just an old horse trainer still going around in circles. Sometimes Fast. Sometimes Half-Fast.

The worst ever was Steve Staar at Yonkers. A distant second Peter Koch from Freehold and Meadowlands.

As as RS you are never going to please everyone. It's just the nature of the beast. There are critics and detractors, but Scott McKelvie was RS for the better part of 30 years and spent 40 with WEG, OJC, etc. Open door policy. You didn't always like his answer, but you got one, and you were heard. Also, you can't talk about RC's without talking about Joe DeFrank. Same thing, he may not have agreed with you, and the answer might have been no, but you always had an opportunity to be heard. Not everyone is going to be a raving fan, of Joe DeFrank, but he built the Meadowlands race calendar, backstretch, meet, and all of racing from day one. He personally developed the idea behind the Meadowlands Pace and Woodrow Wilson, and he made both a reality. The Meadowlands would never have become the premier track and the pinnacle of racing, without Joe DeFrank.
