I am all for students having to pay back their loans.   Why shouldn't they?

As for the rest of your complaints, I think you are listening to CNN too much.

As for Medicaid, the only cuts I have heard of are for people able to work, but choosing not to.
Bleeding out retirement.   You will need to update this comment every couple of months because the stock market is volatile.   If you are retiring and can't afford volatility, you need to put your money in proven winners paying dividends and GIC's.   That is under your control.

I guess I needs to chime in here.
UNCLE SAM paid for me BS degree in MARKETING. And paid for books and a montly stipend for attending. A good reason for those that choose to join MILITARY and then after leavin go and get a college degree. And I might add. Even when in MILITARY and you want to make a career of it,you can still attend part time and UNCLE covers everythin.
Went on to get my MS. It be in PARK and RECREATION MANAGEMENT and minor in ENVIROMENTAL SCIENCE.
Went on at POST GRAD,it called CAPS. CERTIFICATE of ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL STUDY. Got me degree in SITE PLANNING.
IT took some time to get all me degrees because I was always a part time student. I worked and me softball career took up a lot of me time.
But I paid for my MS and CAPS,out of me own pocket. And semester hours were not that cheap. That why I would only take 2 courses a semester.
But I DID IT. Obviously,I have no student loan debt.
Here what I can not understand. People, now collecting SOCIAL SECURITY have still not paid off their STUDENT LOANS. They had a lifetime to do so.
Me thinks they never wanted to. And they probably have great credit, becuse they refused to not pay back what they owed. I got no sympthee for them. REMINDS me and I put them in the same category as DRAFT DODGERS. Let them now sweat and lose income because they refused over years to not pay back

With scholarships and money from us, my son graduated with about $10G student debt. It took him about 2 years to pay it off. In my humble opinion, only military personal whould get a "free ride" for college. Every other one should pay the loan back in the 10 years allowed to pay it back.

You had the good GI bill.
In 1976 they changed the GI bill for education to a system where you paid 1 dollar towards your education and uncle Sam matched that dollar.
I have no clue what todays GI bill looks like, but I hope it's better than the 1976 version because a lot of vets now served during war time in Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan etc.
One of my lifelong friends has 2 sons, one served 2 tours in Afghanistan in the Army and his brother is a lifer in the Marines. I think that one has been in the Marines about 15 years now.

DOGE
« Reply #6 on: June 10, 2025, 08:59:33 AM »
Sounds like Connecticut could use a little DOGE effort of their own !!

In Connecticut, state employees are retiring with pension benefits higher than their last salary. How? It’s a classic scheme known as “spiking.”

Tens of thousands of Connecticut state employees enjoy the unlimited right to spike overtime — that is, to work enormous hours of overtime just before retirement for the sole purpose of boosting the pensions calculation, which includes overtime pay in immediate pre-retirement years.

And that’s not all. Under Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont (D), unionized state employees have enjoyed six consecutive annual pay raises, compounding to a whopping 33 percent. It is no coincidence that state employee wages have climbed the rankings to second place among the states. Nationally, private sector pay has increased only 23 percent over this span. Recently, Lamont promised his union allies “every year I’m here, you’re going to get a raise.”

I can't imagine what that pension spiking will cost taxpayers over the life of these tens of thousands recipients!!!   Public sector living large on your hard earned money.

It seems like a simple thing to correct unless it was written into a union contract, in that case you would have to renegotiate that point when the present union contract is finished.
Simply make the rule that pension monthly payment amount is determined by base pay only, not the overtime added.

Totally agree, the problem being, there is conflict of interest with elected officials negotiating the contract.   There are so many public servants, people wanting to be reelected have an incentive to make all those union members happy.   Give them what they want to secure their vote.

Most Americans agree with President Trump! Most Americans agree that student loans should be paid back! Most Americans agree SNAP should not be paid to illegal immigrants! Most Americans agree Medicaid should not cover illegal immigrants! Trump is not cutting the VA., and I would think most Americans would agree!

JFA, I don’t agree with some things you say, but you make perfect sense here.
I know you hate Trump but under him, military recruitment has gone up big time.
Who would have wanted their kids to commit to military service under the last incompetent leadership. Many people I know are encouraging their kids to get military experience and receive college benefits.
I paid and sacrificed for kids college education and it’s not fair if anyone gets their loans paid back by government.
JFA thanks for your service

RR whatever.
You missin sumthin here. It called STATISTICS.
Tatoo and TRUMP claimin they responsible for great recruitment .
There full of SHIT. Those that enlist can have de-layed enlistment. Could be up to 6 months. Waitin to finish HIGH SCHOOL or COLLEGE.
That would put those #.S under the BIDEN ADMINISTRATION. FACKS ARE FACKS. LIES that perpetuate from this ADMINISTRATION are just that: LIES.

John, your immediate response is to prove recruitment numbers belong to Biden, without even knowing what recruitment numbers RR70s was referring to.
Instead of just slamming your brain shut on a comment you don't like.   Why not investigate a little and share real "statistics" on what recruitment is happening.  I doubt you will though.

John, I'll do some numbers for you !!!

The Army is poised to easily hit its recruiting target this year as the service has made enormous gains in filling the ranks ahead of its traditional summer rush of new enlistments.

As of last week, the Army had enlisted 51,837 recruits, or 85% of its 61,000 target for fiscal 2025, according service data provided to Military.com. A significant portion of that total -- roughly 14,000 -- comes from the service's delayed-entry program, or DEP, which is composed of recruits who signed up last year but are only now shipping out to basic training.

2024            53,000 recruited
2025            61,000 target
as of June     51,837 recruited
Minus DEP     37,837  Trump administration recruits in less than 1/2 year
Double it       75,674  probable # this year and that doesn't account for the back half being the
                                stronger recruiting season.

Those #'s tell me the Army is having a hell of a recruitment year under the Trump Administration.
