How is Ron Steck as a trainer?
« on: May 29, 2025, 11:15:16 PM »
His horse Beast of Delaware didn't make it to the quarter pole in Race 13 at Scioto Downs on Thursday night before he toppled onto the apron. Had the one hole and was the favorite. Vicroy didn't say anything after the race so I don't think the news is good.

did not look like a issue with a leg or equipment

horse may have had a MI

Steck has been around a long time, had a Grand Circuit pacing mare Luc drove ~25 years ago....can't recall her name

Beast of Delaware is a very hot horse.  Looks like he might have cut his air off letting the 9 go causing him to fall.

He had Rail Splitter (Donerail), whom Luc drove for him about 25 years ago.  Good trotter!

Excellent trainer very good person does not use drugs. Been around a long time use old-fashioned training methods. I’m sure the horse was choked or something and that’s why you fell. I did not watch the replay but he’s a zero positive trainer.

I saw the replay and the horse basically slowed up and collapsed on the first turn. Chris could tell something was wrong and got him inside the pylons beforehand or that could have been a nasty accident. Steck used to drive quite a bit but now just trains. Most of his stock race at the Ohio tracks, he's had some sire stakes horses, but alot of his 2 and 3 year olds race at the county fairs in Ohio. I don't think he has ever gotten a positive for anything.

Per Ohio racing commission report, didn’t make it :(
Beast of Delaware, May 29, Scioto R
“Horse took bad step and went down on track hard, face first. Uncertain if horse was dead before it went down, but there was external sign of trauma on head above right eye from impact with the track.”

I saw on freshman focus by the OHHA on YouTube during the interview that Beast of Delaware choked that night. During the interview he got emotional talking about it when talking about a 2 year old named Baby Beast, a full brother to Beast of Delaware. The episode was on June 26th and the comments were around the 25 or 26 minute mark

I've talked to Ron before and also remember him as a very good driver on trotters in the 80's at Northfield.  He's an honest person and trainer.
