He had been driving regularly at Dover the past few years and was driving at Harrington on Mondays. As I recall it was the 1st race of the night and the purse was somewhere around $12,000.

I do not recall Pierce driving at Harrington other than the Quillen-but my memory isn't what it once was so you are probably correct

Steve Warrington was one of my all time favorites and a very classy guy

made a big score when Vankirk won his Battle of Brandywine

when Sannabelle Island had her 23 race win streak snapped in the Shalee at M1(she finished 3rd boxed in)--Steve took full blame for the drive--she was also a tad sick earlier in the week

We have some winner circle pictures of Hunter from the few times we won with him on the occasion we raced in Ohio......never a complaint except when he picked off one of our horses which seldom happened. We started with him when he was a young driver and never regretted it.  If it is true the good
die young and this incident tends to prove that; what does it say about us old  "coots" who are still hanging on?  Our thoughts to all at this time.

Spare a thought to the owners/trainer/driver for the horse that broke that caused the chain reaction. This type of thing goes on with regularity and without any problem to the others in the race. I feel bad for those people because it just happened to result in a death.

This is part of the sport but I bet they are feeling sick to their stomachs.

I've driven in a couple races where bad accidents occurred. Even though my horse never caused the initial reaction I couldn't help but think what if. What if I had stayed on the rail. What if I had pulled sooner. What if I had gone to the front. But in reality, unless you go out there with the sole intention of causing a crash, there's really no fault. It's a dangerous sport and we all know the risks. But it certainly doesn't make it any easier.

If not for the hubless rail there would be alot more accidents.

There is no blame for this horrible accident.  It was an accident.  Fortunately this is a very rare occurrence in harness racing. It’s not handholds when tens of thousands of race are contested without this outcome. It’s not the owner, it’s not Dave.  It’s just tragic.  I’m sure everyone involved feels terrible without any negative comments. Be thankful for life and appreciate others.

Only thing to blame for the wreck is the horse on the lead. Not Dave or any other human to blame.  Many guys walk away after nasty wrecks.  I think we all wish we could change the outcome of this one.

Pierce only drove at Harrington on Mondays that one spring meet because he also did alot of hunting in the area.

Back in the old days some of the drivers used to rock the bike alot to keep the horse going in the stretch.

Yes they did rock the bike But at least sitting up straight they
could see what was going on around them and have a much better reaction time to the situation going on around them

Reading above the replies about the trainer/owner/driver I imagine if that was me, I would be devastated because I wouldn't be at fault or anyone else it is so traumatic for the family and for those close to Hunter and those he drove against and the trainers who used him to name a few.

Hope he is in heaven and is driving up there.

This tragedy reminds of Lou Mellert at Northfield in 1987 when Lou died.  Bill Zentz's horse broke in front and it made Lou fly off his bike and hit his head on the hub rail. All of these accidents are tragic. Fans don't realize the risks these drivers take every race sitting behind a 1200lb animal going at high speed with nothing to keep them in the bike.

The sport also lost Dave Dunckley after Shelley.

Let's also not forget the best of all of them that sadly met their fate on the track.

I believe Northfield also lost Howard Snyder. Horse on lead entering first turn stuck his toes in if i recall just as Mr Snyder settled in behind him. Eighties i believe.

There was a man: Forrest Short who died from injuries suffered in accident
at Scioto in 1975.  81 yrs old. Was the leading driver there in 1960 [would have been 66 then]
I wanna say he was Marty Wollam's grandpa. Definitely related.
