Chief Maynard by Maynard Hanover. Old class horse tough as nails. Everybody who owned him made money with him.

When I was 14, I purchased my first stamdardbred....h is name was Bewitching Blackie (a name that I always hated as his original name was Keystoner's Boy) He was only five but was
pulling a buggy and had gotten too sore to get to church and back.  He had two bows and blind jacks and the guy was going
to send him to the kill pen. I asked the Amishman how much he
thought that the horse weighed.  He said 800 pounds and I could see that he weighed closer to a thousand pounds.  Kill price was 8 cents a pound at the time so I told him I would give
him $64 and he could save the trucking bill that he would incur
sending him to the auction.  I blistered, rubbed, and bandaged
that horse and ended up racing him at the fairs where he earned around $1500. I sold him in the fall for $650 to another
trainer. How easy was that ?  Needless to say I was hooked and sixty five years later, I still have the addiction.
nice story

I bought 2 horses from busse for a whopping $1500. Turned around two days later and took them to kill pen and got $2800. Made a quick $1300

Fact check
IF you bought horses from Don, Daryl, or Tom Busse , it had to be at least twenty years ago.
Please tell us where there was  a kill pen giving $2,800 for two standardbreds?
My estimation,
Total 100% BS!

Bought the sale topper trotter at the Ohio Jug sale for 20K. Big horse that always seem to draw the Amish to watch when he trained. Staked him to the Sire Stakes. Trainer took him down to Pinehurst to winter train and when the horse returned in the Spring the trainer mentioned EPM. From there forward the horse never would stay flat. Got the only thrill of watching David Miller drive him in the the Ohio Breeders Championship on Jug day. Kept him too long and spent way too much trying to cure him as many first time owners do.  So in the end the Amish got their wish and got a nice buggy horse.
