Hello. In researching a horse I adopted I found this forum and this topic. I adopted an OTTSTB named High Joltage about 3 yrs ago. I am trying to connect with anyone that may have information on his history, specifically what happened to him while he was owned/raced by Rene Allard. Jolt has serious issues with his hocks and feet that we can not figure out. I know the owner went to prison for PED’s. Would anyone be willing to talk with me about the drugs that were involved? Jolt was a pretty good racer from what I can tell and stayed on the track a long time. I have been trying for 3 years to solve his hoof problems but to no avail and was hoping more details would shed light as to what may have caused his feet to deteriorate. I would be willing to talk privately to anyone that could help me. Thank you.

Might not be any help, but the horse was owned at one time during his racing career by Ben Stafford and former Philadelphia Flyers star, Rick MacLeish.

Hi! Thank you! I was told he was owned briefly by a NHL player but I didn’t know the name. I’m not very good at using the USTA website. Do you think it’s worth trying to reach out to either person you mentioned? I’m not sure to what level owners are involved with their horses so I don’t know if they would remember much about his physical condition. I realize I may be grasping at straws here. I don’t know if this is an appropriate platform to go looking for information. I just want to do the best I can for Jolt. He’s a super guy and if I can’t turn his feet around I may have to euthanize him. This is kind of a Hail Mary.

Yea, he was a pretty good horse. Made $225,000 in 139 starts.  Rene Allard only had him at the end of his career, the last year.  I'm just guessing but more than likely had some form of Aranesp and probably had his hawk and stifle joints injected many with some version of a hyaluronic acid. What issues are you having with his feet?

I don't think the owner (Rick) could help at all, but the other owner, Ben Stafford, was a trainer. I don't remember if he was training this horse, but I think his son was driving him. OTOH, it was a long time ago so he can't really tell you anything. Whatever happened to this horse happened long after Ben's ownership, and Allard had him at the end of his career (I think). Rather than go down this road, I would have a top vet assess the current situation and do whatever he/she can. Good luck with the old guy! I hope he makes it and can enjoy a nice life of retirement!

Thank you. We have had 3 vets and as many farriers working on him. He has several problems all working against each other. He has terrible Thrush even though he’s free range and we’ve used many different meds that haven’t made a dent. That problem compounded by “the thinnest soles” any of the pro’s have ever seen, keeping him in shoes, pads and pour-in’s. His hocks are fused. Plus he chokes, no matter how sloppy the food is so supplementing him is impossible. I read a statement in this forum about Allard or someone on his farm using yellow liquid in jugs and garden hoses on the horses. I read many died. I was hoping to put the puzzle together so maybe I could understand what happened to his soles and maybe why the Thrush is so resistant. What is OTOH?

He has paper thin soles, very resistant Thrush, fused hocks and he chokes on feed even if it’s liquid. His soles are so thin he is high risk for puncture. We’ve used every conceivable combo of drugs on his Thrush for 3 yrs with no real result. His soles were good enough to remove pads and shoes but wore down to nothing in 3 months so we are back in pads/shoes. He’s got free range pasture and clean dry run in at his disposal. It’s not wet or muddy. We can’t give him nutritional supplements because of his choking issues. I read something on this forum about Allard or his farm hands using yellow liquid and garden hoses on the horses. I wonder if that’s why he chokes. I can’t see him racing as much as he did with feet as bad as his were when we got him so I feel like it developed at his last “home” which was with Allard. Thank you for the information!

I've had horses that were crippled from thrush and white line. I packed their feet and vet wrapped it with their clay and they were sound within 72 hours.

Rene is training a stable somewhere in Prince Edward Island Canada.  They welcomed him with open arms when he got out.   Anyone from there will know his number if you need to reach him.

I sympathize with your situation and thank you for providing him a soft landing. I would have the vets perform a Liver Function Test, to see what kind of shape it is in. You may find that it's damaged to the point where he requires medications in higher doses, ( like a human alcoholics who now need a 5th of Alcohol because a pint has zero effect).

I assume you are not replying to me, but to the main post. I can’t properly describe my disgust but I’m not shocked. Not that I don’t have more than a few words I’d like to share. It’s too bad none of the horses he destroyed got a cent of his “restitution” penance. Scum.

That is a fine idea. I will look in to a more specific Liver function panel.
