What if, in 1988, George bought Roosevelt Raceway?
« on: December 09, 2023, 01:48:48 PM »
In 1988, George Steinbrenner, the principal owner of the New York Yankees, who has been a horse breeder and involved in harness racing for many years, expressed interest in buying the raceway, continuing its operation and developing it into a profitable harness racing track. After a private tour through the raceway he met with Hempstead Presiding Supervisor Joseph N. Mondello and with an agent from the State Economic Development Agency Wednesday. After touring the race track, Mr. Steinbrenner refused to discuss finances and said that before making a final decision he would have to talk to his business associates....... .if he did buy it, and a racino would have followed after 911 in 2001, Roosevelt could have been a huge deal for harness racing.

George was more involved in thoroughbreds. His farm in Tampa had nothing but thoroughbreds.

I’m not sure George had the patience to put up with all the standardbred bullshit not to mention all politicians that had to have their hands greased.

I thought his farm was in Ocala, adjacent to Carl Allen's farm.

GEORGE WAS A THIEF HIMSELF SO HE WOULD FIT RIGHT IN WITH THESE DIRTBAGS TODAY. HE ONLY USED TO JUICE TRAINERS IN CHICAGO FOR YEARS AND TURNED A BLIND EYE.

Correct. George owned TK's Skipper who was trained by Tom. Horse was then sold to Nick Sodano who turned him into a monster.

I remember the pinstripe stable Silverman trained for. They were a bunch of Yankees. I think it was Phil Rizzuto, Mickey Rivers, Roy White I think maybe Yogi and a few others.

HE OWNED WAY NICER HORSES THAN TK'S SKIPPER WITH HARMER. HIS PARTNER WAS CHARLIE DAY UNTIL GEORGE AND DAY REALIZED THAT HARMER WAS RIPPING THEM OFF BLIND. GEORGE ALSO OWNED HORSES WITH ROGER WELCH IN CHICAGO. TKS SKIPPER WAS A GOOD HORSE PERIOD.

You're fucking nuts. TK's Skipper was a world champion that earned over 1 million and was only 1 fifth off of Niatross world record of 1:49.1. Please, don't embarrass yourself.

Family members purchased 50% of Balmoral the the late 80's
