Handicapping or numbers?
« on: June 26, 2023, 02:51:10 PM »
What percentage of handle is from handicappers?  Many people I see at track are betting their numbers or playing the board.  Some also play based on horse name or color.  Playing a certain driver or trainer may be considered handicapping.  Some just play the morning line or bet the tip sheet or handicapper selections.  Knew someone who would bet $20 to win on any horse with “Hanover” in name,  if there was more than one in a race, he would box in an exacta.  I consider myself a handicapper but biggest cash was when I played the wrong track.  I almost threw the ticket away.

I gave up handicapping 15 years ago after much pain & agony. Now I just play numbers and don't blame myself for my atrocious 'capping skills. Even a blind squirrel finds the odd nut!

I have often handicapped a race correctly, but bet it wrong.  That has been the most frustrating part for me.

doesn't matter the method - money management is the key.

My friend that is the best advice ever posted on Plop!
When I first went to the grandstand at Pompano I went with Ora Stratton. We bet the same horses. He went home a winner. I went home a looser.
Why?
He would bet small most of the time, but the horses he really liked he would bet big.
I bet small on all my bets.
I soon learned to only bet on the horses Ora really liked.
Then we both went home winners.
I am just an old horse trainer still going around in circles. Sometimes Fast. Sometimes Half-Fast.

Ora was a cool guy. I worked with him at Roosevelt
