38th Breeders Cup
« on: October 26, 2021, 08:41:04 AM »
The 38th Breeders Cup will soon be here and I can only think about how one man's dream that of John Gaines morphed into what racing has become. I'm sure that John Gaines a breeder and builder would be rolling over in his grave. Hollywood Park where the first Breeders Cup was run is long gone, we see horses today with less starts per year than back 38 years ago. We have indicted trainers charged for drug use and race tracks using their legal right as to who can race at their tracks. John Gaines original idea was to build interest in the sport to withstand the waves of other forms of gambling to survive and then with this pot of gold at the end of the year racing decided to open it's doors to all and in my opinion had the Thoroughbreds stayed a rich man's game it wouldn't be in trouble now. Certain owners within the club whether because of ego or were outliving the older members felt they had to make their mark so they decided to flood the media with the dream that anyone could own a horse and shoot for that dream and this may well have been the beginning of the end, who knows. The first Cup 38 years ago was racing pure and simple, this November we'll have a show of wannabes, fashion and a network who will focus on the ego's of the millennials impliying that all of this other stuff is more important and the racing is just an afterthought.

Drove this morning to Del Mar. Weather wasn't all that great gloomy with a chill but the racing was good. Gun Runner first crop sented a impressive filly who had made it 4-4. Bobby Flay not only a BC winning owner but a breeder as well. Baffert with another 2 yr old. At the end a booing crowd who loved the favorite who broke through the gate was scratched then ten minutes later announced will race for purse money only. Had a huge turn of foot won going away and the punters were not happy. Good day in all minus the ripping up of tickets.

Apparently the assistant starter opened the gate. Innocent horse. I smell conspiracy. Or something.
