happens all the time here at the pomp. its not ideal but when you handicap just put it out of your mind. id say most of the time the better of the two finishes better. nothing bad going on. it fills races more. helps trainers out that have many in the same condition. its nice to have full 10 horse fields.

Most of the drivers like to know how a horse is "feeling" lately, or how they have trained up to the event.  Others prefer to look at the program and judge ho to proceed by past form, and some trainers are fine with that.  Usually, as the price goes up, so do the discussions.

The envelope speaks volumes.

Pretty much, unless stuck behind rats you cant even boat home.  Take your 25 bux for the drive and go home.

Most trainers won't tell a driver stuff like drop in the 5 hole, pull at the half behind cover, go 3 wide at the 3/4, etc because 99% of them know nothing ever goes as planned out there. They usually give info that fatboy mentioned, whether or not the horse is on a line, hates air, loves going first up, let the outer flow come to him, don't let anything look him in the eye, don't touch anything but the shaft with the whip, don't fall off, shit like that

Funny story about telling drivers what to do.. I barely had my trainers license for a year or two when I was a kid and one Sunday afternoon it was a day that some of the Meadowlands Drivers were up at Monticello.. Anyhow my regular driver couldn’t drive that day so I put John Campbell on the horse .. When I handed JC the lines for the post parade , I introduced myself , told him he was a real easy horse to drive, races best covered up and he has absolutely  no early speed so don’t bother leaving.. Of course he shoots out for the lead to prove me wrong ( after all he really was an amazing driver) and the horse breaks going into the turn and needless to say finishes way back .. JC gets off the horse and I go thanks for listening to me , hands me the lines and walks  away without uttering a word.. 😆
On top of that my mom was mad at me for not getting JCs autograph..She could care less that I made no money that day..

Indeed ngc3 ngc3  Great list of standby instructions if just to make it look good.  Dumbest thing I ever did was tell Ray Remmen how to get my colt around the track in a 100k consolation....It was pretty obvious during elims my colt was just there for a check.  He wasn't happy and I didn't get a check. 73cv.2
