Claiming Knowledge ?
« on: October 30, 2020, 07:49:56 PM »
Need some comments to better learn why someone would claim one horse over another. Yonkers 1st Race Friday 10/30/20. In that race how much would the 4 YO cost and how much the 8 YO, both geldings?   Why would the 8 YO (Mr Carrots) get claimed and the favorite (4 YO) Maching Time) who won by seven lengths not get claimed?  The horse that got claimed was the third choice by the bettors and the horse that won the race was the favorite. I would think I would have claimed Maching Time rather than Mr Carrots, no? What would be the best move/claim?

I guess there are cases where that could be true.

There are a number of factors. Maybe the claiming trainer saw something wrong with the other horse. Maybe he thought that current trainer had already "peaked" that one and the other still had room for improvement. Maybe his wife liked the name. (Yes, I've actually seen that happen). These guys are usually looking for potential, not what they've done in the past few weeks

George Brennan owns the 4yr  old     Most owners do not want to claim a horse off a driver

Bingo, Perry Mason. If you claim from a horse a catch driver owns or trains, it makes it a bit uncomfortable to then want to use that driver to drive any of your horses in the future, no less have that driver driving in a race where you might have a horse in. Kind of gives those in that position to run a horse in a more favorable class without as much concern about losing it in a claim.  Of course, you can always ask first

Perry Mason / Hay Daze,
Your input was really educational , thanks!  Really appreciate the education from all the other posters also. Things that were said all make sense and taking it all together draws a good picture of the claiming unwritten rules and horseman manners. I learned a lot.

First up Front 8 Hole,
That is something that a wife liked a horse's name so the husband claimed it for her. Hard to believe, but I do believe you and almost anything these days.
Thanks!
