Mohawk Million
« on: March 05, 2020, 01:40:27 PM »
Can someone explain to me why anyone would but up c$110,000 to race in a non stakes event?  Is this going to become the norm at WEG?  I guess maybe I am looking at this wrong.  I can see staking for actual stake races but that cost less than a tenth of this!

I mean it cost less to supplement into these races that what the cost of this thing is!

It's more about the prestige than the earnings

Nothing shady about it.  Those owners are filthy rich.

Not sure how Glengate Farms and Dreamland will have the horsepower to enter, probably the most likely ones to sell or trade or whatever.  The other owners should have no problem getting a good enough 2 yr old trotter to enter

its rather simple
inflating earnings, nope, these should be the best 9 or 10 2 yr old trotters so best versus best
think about it , the guys who bought in bought expensive yearlings so they take a shot , if for some reason they cant come up with one perhaps some small to mid tier owner ends up with a monster by accident and decides he wants a spot , so he has to buy one  of their spots
and that is when the real fun starts , come a few weeks before the start there might be 12 really good horses but only 9 spots, how bad does someone want in

lets face it , this sport can use all the help it can get  to survive, if this gets some publicity and media coverage, perhaps shown on tv than it is worth a try
after all as noted prior its just a bunch of rich owners betting against each other which is fine

as for weg and harness racing we all know it is not their priority but they wont kill it , remember that they have nothing else in the winter so it pays some bills and keeps some of the cousins employed

Exactly how the Pegasus World Cup works. Assuming that is the model.

Absolutely right . WEG o/a Horner make rules to protect the top echelon but do ZIPPO for the everyday racing. i.e not letting owners race a horse if they HAD a horse with trainer with positives in stakes.
Grand Circuit represents less then 1% of the handle and racing at WEG.

I have to admit though that when they do retention they have lots of security and it is well run, not like other jurisdictions that really dropped the ball like Yogurtgate.

how in gods name is the Mohawk million WEG pandering to the upper echelon
I believe WEG is contributing  zero dollars, the entrants front up all the money for the purse
maybe, just maybe it might create some interest outside the normal fan base
now in  terms of supporting smaller owners breeders how about the following Ontario bred restricted stakes that have been created in the last two years
harvest, autumn, spring , prospect
in addition to the gold, grassroots, sboa

All of those stakes that you mentioned the money is coming from HIP (horse improvement program ) Government money, all jurisdictions have similar programs.

The persons that purchased a spot behind the gate are from the upper echelon and really don't care how much money they lose in the industry and if you examine these entrants further you will see that they did not make their money in horse racing. It's an expensive hobby for them.

My point is these individuals don't keep the industry going year round.
