Jimmy Freight Stakes
« on: December 17, 2019, 11:39:55 AM »
I see Mr. Sorella announced a new stake for 2 yr old only sired by Jimmy Freight.   Great to see someone support the industry but I don't think there is anything that drove more owners out of the game then going all in on their own stallion. I see Mr. Sorella bought a bunch of mares to breed to Jimmy Freight.  Just a death sentence.

Just like the Elitist Cup back in the late 80's, eligible to horses who were sired by Elitist.

That’s why he is sponsoring the race he will win his money back

I had one of those Elitists, a filly. 1992, I think, which was the last year that stake was sponsored.  Raced sick the day of the elims at Syracuse. If not sick, would have made the Final and probably been a well beaten third. I still miss that 12,000! She recovered and broke her maiden at Monticello a week later. Not much after that, but as an owner only in the biz about 4 years at the time, was a fun horse to jog on the back track at Monticello.

I think the proper terms for these races would be futurity, but the buggy racing crowd aint that smart to know better

i see the benefit for mr sorella and jimmy freight
not sure i see the benefit for the overall industry
a mare bred to jimmy is a mare not bred to another stallion so zero sum game fillies and colts race against each other??

Jimmy has come a long way to breeding shed, all the way from the Amish half milers
It's a great game, if you have the means to play

No stake payments. No starting fee. Hard not to like.
