Not dumb

Some horses sprint faster quarters while some carry their speed for longer
When you slow it down too much
It can adversely affect you and give the horse behind you a better chance
Only applies to the 3rd or second horse behind you most of the time

Then when he goes blazing fractions you would come back and say, why didn't he rate him?

Western Joe has been blowing by horses late in the stretch all year with that same kind of trip.  Tetrick will not be coming to you anytime soon for advice on how to drive a horse.

You can talk to him all you want, you're not giving one of the top drivers in the sport advice how to drive a horse. He's plenty confident in his own ability and in a mile and a quarter race he'll admit he justifiably rated him and just got beat by a better horse that given day.
