Cable is hooked to ground and then to horse.  Death is almost instant.  The lightening is used as a smoke screen and is blamed for the horses death.  Then insurance checks and finds there was lightening in the area.  Lots of 100K duds went that way.

Actually Fats I never saw it happen, although thanks for the clarification.  During the time, we all knew it was going on because there was so many horses dying and it was being talked about almost as if it was OK.  When people started getting caught and prosecuted for insurance fraud it all came to light.
