Tross: In a character defamation case doesn't the person filing the suit have to prove that he suffered monetary losses for it to be successful?

i am not a lawyer but i do not think so.proof of $$$ losses is what is used to determine  what the $$$ award would be for damages.
i have read of cases where the person who was defamed was making more $$$ after all the bad publicity and was awarded $00 by the court.

if a person had a business making a million dollars a yr and was falsely accused of being a rapist and lost all that business because of it he probably has a case
on the other hand revealing what is a matter of public record is not slander
