Journalism will be 2-5 at Monmouth in the Haskell
« on: July 15, 2025, 07:48:07 PM »
This saturday's Haskell drew a field of 8 and looks like  a "walk-over" for the favorite. I had the exacta when Gosger had a five length lead in the lane and still gets caught by Journalism. They meet again Saturday. He'll be in the mix early. But Goal Oriented from Baffert's barn will take some money too! Check out the field and see who you like.

1) Bracket Buster            Oliver/Velaquez         10-1
2) Journalism                  McCarthy/Rispoli       4-5
3) Wildncrazynight          Ward/Castillo             30-1
4) Burnam Square          Wilkes/Hernandez, Jr.  5-1
5) National Law              Duarte Jr./Ortiz, Jr.    20-1
6) Gosger                       Walsh/Saez               9-2
7) Kentucky Outlaw         Dunn/Geroux            15-1
8) Goal Oriented             Baffert/Prat               4-1

I agree, 2/5, 122lbs wow that in itself is a vacation.

Weather forecast is unsure, but rain possibly.

Dry Journalism annihilates them.

Wet, should be no difference.

What Journalism did to Gosger was sick, and awesome.

If wet I'm willing to forgive Burnham Square's (Gelding) KYD sloppy performance, and a possible second to Journalism.

Goal Oriented didn't race at 2 yo, that's interesting. also bumped, checked in last race and no experience on wet I can see.

The 1 is a every other race clunker, looking to likely, clunk.

National Law seems to respond with better Jocks.

Hard to toss Gosger, maybe if wet, less distance, 7lb less weight.

2/6458 (dry)
2/458 (wet)

#2 Journalism will leave no doubt that it is between him and Sovereignty for 3yo c/g horse of the year.

I'm hoping to get filthy rich betting Magnitude in the Travers.

"It is unbelievably exciting. Boy, he looks ready to jump back in the mix now."
 - Asmussen after the Iowa Derby.

Now, if I don't get filthy rich from betting him in the Travers, my strategy will probably include laying off betting Magnitude at a short price in his next race when he no doubt  pummels another bunch of crows a la the Iowa bunch in some trifling G2/3 prep for the Breeders Cup.

My plan will then conclude by betting far too much on the horse in the Classic at 15/1, remaining convinced he's the reincarnation of Ghostzapper.

At least I have a plan.  ;D

Journalism should win easily as a heavy favorite so there really isn't much money to be made.

I'm thinking a $20 straight Tri 2-8-6.

Excellent scheduling suggested, and a sound value plan.

What Steven Asmussen's whisperer herein, Calhoun, has laid out is a likely scenario.

The 300' elevation in Saratoga Springs, Sovereignty, and carrying an extra 4lbs, 126, might as well be Magnitude racing on the top of Mount Everest.

Why bother.

And while we all may not want to see, I surely don't, a Magnitude - Itsmybirthday rematch, some minor league prep with "Derby" on the end of it might be fitting, i.e. Ellis Derby, OK Derby...

Is the Pacific Classic a bridge too far, and then leave him stabled there in the Del Mar hood for the BC, I dunno, more likely your scenario.

Then the BC, 15-1 is in the ballpark.  A 109 and change for the first 6f, and coming home in 51 change for the last 4f, could very well do it - and make you "filthy rich", and could very well turn out this giant of 3yo, well, that he's a Ghostzapper doppelganger after all.

Magnitude shocks the world!   ;D

How about this...

Why not Gosger? Why not Burnham Square?

- Gosger He's 1/2 length shy of being a TC race winner

- Gosger more lightly raced and, arguably, more likely to improve than Journalism.

- Burnham Square is a G1 winner.. Blue Grass.

-  Journalism could regress (?)  The main goal is the Travers (?)

- The price... Journalism 1/2 ... maybe 3/5 .. Baffert gonna take $ and so should Burnham Square.

So, I'm against the chalk.

Gosger about 4/1 is ok. So is Burnham at 10/1.

good luck

An update on this race.

I think #1 Bracket Buster won big in the Pegasus in the slop and has a shot to be in the tri. JV is a good choice and fits this horse well

Also #4 Burnham Road had a traffic issue in the Derby, and might be in the number here. He's won a Grade 1 and i'm watching the board on this one.

The #8 Goal Oriented,  has been given some quick 5 furlong workouts by Baffert. Wants some speed out of him. This trainer has won this race 9 times and you can be sure he'll be ready. But is he good enough? He'll take a ton of money, which might make others in the field a better value in the exotics.

Gotta keep studying this race!
