I AGREE! ngc3 ngc3 ngc3 The horse cutting the mile looked lame, most made a break, and the pocket rocket (winner) was just waiting for his winners check.

Now the next question is:  do these horses have to qualify again to make the times posted in order to race NYSS??

No, their time they needed to enter the NYSS races is good for 45 days.

Three quarters in 1:40.3.  When was the last time you saw that in a non-fair race on a fast track (1970s?).  Using 1:30 as a benchmark, that’s a 53 length difference.

I saw a sire steaks trot race at Monti in the early 90's go in 211 and change but it was raining and foggy.

NYSS racing in serious trouble. 2 legs 2 excells if youre lucky. I remember back in the day you'd have 6 divisions of Steaks and 6 divisions of NYBred Late Closer. All been going downhill year after year. How I yonder for the years of the syracuse fair

The NY trainers have gone nuts in their billing with shipping costs to boot and from June to September you are looking at over $5000 per month including the stakes fees! Shipping distances for a $20,000 Excelsior purse is risky. The purse should be $30,000 now for the Excelsior series, which has a $300 entry fee, and lower the final purses to accommodate that. The top division requires a 2% of the purse entry fee as well.

I have had the same New York based trainer(s) for 15 years now.  I haven't seen the billing and shipping costs go "nuts".  I have rarely questioned my bills and told my trainer(s) they should charge more.  And believe it or not, I'd pay it, unlike other owners.  I have copies of my bills from 10+ years ago and they were in the realm of normalcy then and still in the normalcy today in 2025.

The 5k a month is pretty accurate and probably closer to 6k (and this doesn't include vet bills)!  There are also other stakes that horses are eligible for with higher fees to enter and race in.  As far as the shipping costs, the 'bigger name' trainers charge more than the "regular" everyday trainer.  The 'bigger name' trainer charges a higher daily rate and incidentals too.

I personally agree with much of this. the excel races should definitely go for more money and there should be a market share on the stakes money and for the sake of the sport, all legs at all tracks should go for the same money. Yonkers needs to profit share, someone needs to wake the f up.

My grandfather had a win picture from Connaught Parc in the early 70's with Kays Kaddy winning in 2:32.xx in the deep, deep slop with Orville Coville in the sulky.

And I remember Green Mtn shortening the races some nights to 3/4 mile, and they would pace through the mud in 2:00! That was on the old 5/8 oval. I don’t recall similar problems when they enlarged to 13/16.
