Show that to me in print, because my memory says different.

I know that in 1970, when Carmine was laid up in the hospital for a while, Marion was training his horses.  Not sure if he drove much, except in qualifiers??

Loved watching her race!  Hardly ever missed one!
Certainky not advocating racing horses that are unsound, but I remember one race at the M, she had the 6 hole. She looked like she couldn't walk when she hit the track. Steve kept scoring her down hard as if he was trying to "work it out". Then she went out and dominated the boys. ;D

His name was Marion Dover Tolson.. As previous poster said in 1970 he was an assistant trainer to Carmine Abbatiello.. He was a tall guy 6"2 and a little over 200lbs.. He started down in Baltimore and came up to NY in 60's.. Very nice guy..

Top horseman. He caught my attention as a kid . I could swear his name was Marion "Dolber" Tolson, but OLDGUY says I am wrong. Can you confirm? Thanks...

ok  I apologize. Its DOVER.  Yes, a very nice, polite accomplished trainer.

As a side note , Dover wasn't his real name.. It was a nickname as he was born in Dover , Delaware

Well That part I knew. It was Marion. I mentioned that in each post. At his size, he struck an imposing figure to me as a kid on the backstretch.  Weird, what you remember.

This is a great article about him.  The link will bring up a NY Times "Archvie" article, which is a paid service, but you get one "free" article.  When the window comes up, just click "continue" and it will take you to the article (which also includes a photo of him and, as a bonus, the RR entries for that evening!!)

Ty  I found a different piece in the Times about Black horseman. In those days, 1972, The Times still used the word Negro to refer to them.
