Here's a tough one, I lived in Old Brookville on Long Island, a short drive from Roosevelt.  In my very young years when I was perhaps 16-17, my friends and I used to jump the fence at Orbachs. There was a very gutsy claimer who was probably the biggest crowd favorite. He was trained and driven by jimmy Cruise and came out of every race looking dead lame. Thus nobody even conceived of claiming him until The Hickory Way Stable and George Regan took a shot. This was a big time horse. Who was he?

"Rainy Days make for ??? horses and ??? grooms.
Can you fill in the blanks?
" Rainy Days make for (FAST) horses and (DRUNKEN) grooms"!

UNFUCKING REAL!

You absolutely know who I am. I'm tall and was a big board changer. I use Al Winger or Frankie Tags for a price and Chappy for a sure home run. I played gin in the track kitchen with Herve. He was terrible. and not real good at AC either. Did you know Danny Marks? Big time tout. Died way back. I spoke of him to Sam R who I don't see here anymore.
I also got in on a lot of Eddie Cobb action.

Back in the 60's-early70's, everyone used wooden shaft sulkies. 80% were made by Jerald.  What great driver of the times who trained and drove for the Armstrong Bros of Ontario, owned a major interest in Jerald?  He also trained and drove the great trotting mare, Fresh Yankee.
I don't know about sulkies one bit.

Fresh Yankee was Joe O'Brien I believe ... also

ARMstrong BROthers = ARMBRO ... (bonus ;D)

Good Morning Kooter,
I think you are wrong about "Jigglin Jesus" owning a
part of Jerald. I think it was the CA. company Wilform.
Back in the 70's Wilform under Joe came out with the first offset race bike. It was not acceped then, but today all the new bikes are offset.
The Wilform bikes were real heavy. They were referred to as Joe's war wagons.
It was said of Joe that the first 1/4 you couldn't keep in out of a hole and the last 1/4 you couldn't keep him in a hole.
Jerald of Waterloo, Iowa still make jog carts and fancy carts for show horses.

SP Park paddock  Mid60's
I am a teenager.
I am adjusting something on the race bike.
Joe (Jigglin Jesus) O'Brien walks near.
He stops and picks up the shafts of the race bike and squeezes them together. He never said a word.
I was so nervous all I could think about was that this is Mr. O'Brien and he is helping me.
What was I adjusting?
Why was he squeezing the shafts together?

Joe O'Brien winter trained in Shafter, CA.
When he would ship east he would bring along a gazillion 5 gallon pails full of something.
Each pail weighted a gazillion pounds.
Gazillion, now that is big!
What was in the gazillion pails?
What was it used for?

Back in the day most stables kept an up to date equipment card on each horse. Most likly taped to the inside of that horses tack trunk.
On the eq card what would 28-56-88 mean?
How about 3 5/8 - 50 degrees - level - 5/16"  half round?
Or maybe  3 1/2 - 55 - degrees - level- 1/2" half round half swedge?
Or Murphy/L ?

Well now I know I'm wrong. Joe O'bien along with being a great horseman, was a monster prick.  Nobody on the backstretch liked him at all. And he liked to be referred to as Mr. O'Brien. I raced the Hollywood Park meet with O'Brien, Vallaro, Farrington, Dennis, and Vladdingham. It was a great meet, with all the big FFA's coming for the big overnight purses. I remember Joe, setting the World Record for pacers with Steady Star who wore everything in the tack shop, even a brush shadow roll, time 1:52 with prompters at the Red Mile.    Who broke that record in Northern Ca. The horse was owned by Lloyd Arnold who also owned the track where the record was broken.

A side story about Rum Customer, a horse you obviously favor and Bret, a horse I favor, If you put both names in a bag and I got to reach in and pull one out, I would be overjoyed with either.  The reason I favor Bret ever so slightly is because he spent his career, dragging a human anchor around the track while Rum Customer basically had Del. I think the tooth pick might have helped.
