NJ taxpayers subsidize Meadowlands
« on: July 14, 2023, 07:15:31 AM »
If there was any question regarding the beneficial impact of the state’s five-year, $100 million bailout for New Jersey’s horse racing industry, which was approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Phil Murphy in 2019, one needs only to look at Friday’s entries at The Meadowlands.
Friday’s 14-race card at the Big M features 12 first-round divisions of New Jersey Sire Stakes action for 2-year-old trotters and pacers, with a total of 93 horses entered in those events. It is the most horses entered in the opening round of the NJSS for 2-year-olds since 2007 when the names of 104 horses were dropped in the entry box.
"Everything is on the upswing and that would not have happened without the taxpayers bailing us out,  whether they know it or not,” Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association officer Mike Klau said.

Klau recently talked with New Jersey State Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin about the impact of the taxpayer funded subsidies and the importance of it being continued.

“The point I made to the Speaker is that all this doesn’t happen without the bailout,” said Klau, who is the SBOANJ second vice president as well as chairman of the Breeder Committee and syndication manager at Southwind Farms.

Hmmm and the permeant track is run by Gural, who seeks bailouts everywhere he goes.  Maybe its time for different ownership/ management at these tracks. NJ and NY taxpayers should be mad as hell.

I am no fan of corporate welfare but, this is one project that appears to have met it's objective. Unlike the mass $180 million + per year give-a-way in New York.

While i'm not a big supporter of tax dollar "giveaways", i have little doubt that both NY and NJ waste tons of money every year on things the general public knows very little about. I love both the trotters and the runners, so if the states are going to help these tracks "stay afloat", i'm all for it.

20 million a year. How much tax revenue does the horse racing industry provide?

How much money are they making on the sports betting? Of course, that revenue doesn't count, money is needed from taxpayers to fund amatuer races

Tax Payers shouldn't be penalized for these subsidies. When legislation could be written to allocate funds from the sports book. That would be to easy, why upset the apple cart to from the casino coffers when its easier to tax the public. Fucking disgraceful.
