Great Memories - Happy History
« on: May 09, 2025, 12:16:17 AM »
Was reading an old post from 2023. “ who was a trainer/ driver to make over $100,000 in % from one race.”  One name came to mind. It was Bill Haughton. The race was the 2 million dollar Woodrow Wilson Pace. The horse was Mackenzie Alamhurst. I believe it was 1981 or 1982. Mr. Haughton won the richest race ever in harness or flat racing at the time and Mr. Haughton was the trainer/driver. The winner share was one million plus so 5% training and 5% driving fee is $ 100,000.

Meadow Ford. I stand corrected. You are right Del Indio was the trainer/driver to get a $100,000. Pay day. I wish more people would post some good memories on here. I just joined “horseplop”. Well I can’t believe all the negativity with the active posts. It appears that certain people are so  hateful. They are so angry. What happened to all one big family. No matter what backside anywhere. Most everyone got along. Helped each other. Traveling the Grand Circuit for years going track to track. Horseman stuck together and helped each other out. More positive. For instance post something on two Free for all pacers this week that are coming back “Ken Hanover” & “Musketeer Hanover” both won in 1:48 at two different tracks. Hopefully they compete in some FFA events. Anyway I am going to be posting some Triva history questions this week and see if there is interest in some positive replies. And yes I stand to be corrected sometimes. It’s called Oldhimers.

Yes Old Guy Fortune Teller with Eldon Harner did make over a million, but the question was "in one race".

I remember Governor Skipper training at the Pinehurst harness track in NC. Buck Norris trained the colt and I believe John Chapman drove him. Actually I was just talking to Scott Norris earlier ( Buck’s son ). One memory after another. Thanks Meadow Ford for the question!!!!!

AH Pinehurst
Layed over there for a couple days one fall in the early 70's.
Shipping PA. to Pompano.
They put us in an old barn that had been empty all summer.
All I can remember were the giant rat holes in every stall.
I still get "the willies" thinking about them.
Del Cameron put me to work jogging and training a set.
Glad to get away from the rats. and I aint going back!

Well Meadow Ford. I would hate the rats also. No matter where they are !!!!!  Believe me Pinehurst is a nice place now. Most all the barns have been upgraded as well as most all the tack rooms. I have been training there 19 years and I have never seen a rat there. Occasionally a few mice. The Village of Pinehurst took it over in the early 90’s. They have professional services that take care of any issues. The mile clay track was re-surfaced and calibrated. The half mile track will be totally resurfaced this summer and the sand 5/8 jog track is in great shape. All new paddocks. Small but all have been replaced. We have a great matinee day which is the first Saturday in April. We have 2,500 - 4,000 people attend. Stop by and visit. I’m sure you will enjoy your visit

Here is one you can't lookup anywhere.
Peter Haughton
16 years old
Driving at Troy PA. county fair.
Mother was there.
Dad not there.
Witch one of the many "Geen Wave" 2nd trainers was the groom that day for young Mr. Haughton?
Hint
He had a fruit for a nick name.
