Thought I'D start a topic about BOXING again.
« on: September 25, 2025, 10:09:02 AM »
Relly not into today's types, but yesteryears.
So I'M lookin up some older HEAVYWEIGHTS that were real charecters.

ME will start with "TWO TON TONY GALENTO". He has to top the list. The comments about him were famous.
The guy was 5 foot 8 and weighed in at 270. They said when he laid down his stomach went over 5 foot 8. He never wanted to train. And his talk and accent were hiliourious. I men he fought some great ones in his carreer, but started like everyone else on undercard doin 4 rounders.
(1) One time before a 4 rounder,a friend of his bet him, before the fight, bet him $10.00 he could not eat 50 hot dogs and then go fight. TWO TON ate 52 dogs and then went out and KO'D his opponent in round 3.
(2) Another time in dressin room before fight,he ate 20 hot dogs, drank 6 shots of whiskey and downed 12 beers. He WON by knockout. He always said: DRINKIN a TON of BEER,makes one stronger.
(3) Before his fight against MAX BEAR SR. who was BRUTAL,TWO TON downed 2 huge plates of spagattii and meatballs, and a huge plate of lassania and washed it down with 12 beers. NOW he ready to fight. And he knocked down BAER in the second round, the first time he had ever been knocked off his feet. Other than that, the fight was stopped in round 4. SPORTSWRITERS wrote it was the most BRUTAL beatin they had ever witnessed. Although after fight,BAER said: DAMN ,I hit him so hard and he would not go down. And he said: This guy hits hard and one of my toughest opponets yet.
Toooo be CONTINUED.....

Hey JFA you'll love this one. When I was a kid I threw newspapers to make money. You know who one of my customers was? John Johnson's mother. John Johnson was the trainer of James "Buster " Douglas...famous of course for destroying Mike Tyson in Tokyo in 1990. I met John and Buster multiple times when I would go to that house once a month to collect my money. Not in a fancy neighborhood, just a regular middle class neighborhood in a suburb of Columbus. Both ultra nice, down to earth guys.

Great story,JT. I'm gonna skip my continue on for a moment about 2 ton and others.
Must be close to 45 or 46 years ago and I lived in VEGAS. Used to go to a long ago deceased  casino called the SILVER SLIPPER. Or I think that what it be called. Each week on a WEDNESDAY or THURSDAY night they would hold BOXING matchups. I went every time. Don't know what MOB owned the joint at time,as my preferance was goin to the deceased STARDUST owned by CHICAGO. But,I'ss gotta tell ya. The joint is packed. It a small stadium, but every MOBSTER was there each week. If the FBI was ever lookin to find them, they just needed to go there. Held maybe 7 fights a night and these guys brutilized each other. What enjoyment.

Got to say another thing. I remember BUSTER. Nice guy, although never met like you did, personnally.
But one day at ARLINGTON on the second floor,LEON SPINKS showed up with his manager. His carreer was over. He was BROKE. So he signed autographs or let people take pictures with him. His only request was, they buy him a shot of whiskey. He finnally had to sit in a cushioned chair were he passed out. BRUTAL: The guy should have had it all after beatin ALI for TITLE, instead beggin for SHOTS of WHISKEY. His brother MICHAEL made good though.
