Heart problems in standard bred racehorses
« on: May 03, 2018, 03:15:36 PM »
There is an abnormal rate of horses with heart problems in the harness game which really doesen't exist in t-breds ....Do you think of all the blood builders and epogen and enhancments these may play a part in a horse dying on the track?????These are facts in speaking to a vet that I have been friends with for over 20 years.......Look at some reversal of form of horses that race in Maine and Pennslavania go to plainridge and cant compete....makes you wonder????

I think its probably equally bad in both breeds.

Breeding over several decades for speed, speed and more speed has to have an impact.

Training down hard for early results does not help.

Plus if they are uncut, they're not racing at 4 and there's no reason not to plunge the needle often.

If a horse changes hands frequently (ie claimers ) you can guarantee that epogen has been run through their system.

You may be on to something but T-bred die at a much higher rate although most Are breakdown related.

Uh, dont know your well informed vet is  but T-breds die way more then Standardbreds, there's a year U.S. list out there somewhere, but last time i read it, it was at least 5-1, and they are lucky to race past 4 yes old,   besides there are a lot of reasons any Racehorse can possibly die on  the track or after a race that has nothing to do with any drugs, Colic, Tie up, and un diagnosed Anyerism,  it's not always blood builders, or drugs, ect...

Most of these " trainers and grooms"" today DONT even know what the thumps are- or why they happen! (But they know how to give that vein shot, don't they?)
