What The Monroe Doctrine Actually Means
With everything happening with Greenland, I think this is worth explaining because the Monroe Doctrine is becoming relevant again in a way most Americans probably have not thought about in years.
The Monroe Doctrine dates back to President James Monroe’s message to Congress in 1823. In simple terms, Monroe warned European powers against further colonization or political interference in the Western Hemisphere. At the same time, the United States said it would stay out of European affairs and would not interfere with European colonies that already existed in the Americas.
So the original Monroe Doctrine did not mean the United States owned or controlled the Western Hemisphere. It established the principle that what outside powers did in this hemisphere was a direct concern of the United States.
More than 200 years later, President Trump’s administration has formally introduced what it calls the “Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.” The National Security Strategy says the United States intends to prevent competitors from outside the Western Hemisphere from positioning military forces or controlling strategically important assets here.
That is where Greenland comes in
President Trump made the connection himself at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21. He described Greenland as part of North America, on the northern frontier of the Western Hemisphere, called it a core national security interest of the United States, and said it has been American policy for hundreds of years to prevent outside threats from entering this hemisphere.
On Friday, Greenland, Denmark and the United States announced that they expect to sign a new security agreement next week during the United Nations General Assembly. The agreement is intended to strengthen security in Greenland, the Arctic and the North Atlantic while recognizing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.
That is why the Monroe Doctrine connection matters. The original doctrine was about preventing outside powers from expanding their influence into the Western Hemisphere. The Trump Corollary applies that same basic hemispheric security principle to the modern world, including military positioning and control of strategically important assets.
Greenland sits directly inside that conversation.
