Trainers Trading Horses In Claimers

Yonkers Race 1 Laterza and Stratton traded horses (Claims).  Does that happen a lot in the same race? I know in the course of a night it happens a lot but I don't see it much in the same race.  Second question, did they know before the race that their horses were claimed? Or did one see the other claim his horse and get angry so put in a claim on the other one's horse as revenge?

Some tracks require all claims to be made before the 1st race.  Others need the claim submitted at least 30 minutes before the race you want to put the claim in for.
A  lot of the horsemen let the other trainer know they are putting in a claim as a matter of courtesy.

It's called "rent a horse". About 5 stables are doing all the claiming. They don't care about losing the horse, for they claim a lot too. If they did, they wouldn't put their horse in a claimer. You do see a lot of claim backs too. Many put the horse back in the same class, win a nice purse, the horse gets claimed, and they move on.

My horse was one of the ones claimed away and now they want me to buy in on the new one which was also previously in the stable.  $20k F&M claimers are big money with only a few good horses so it's a money making investment and typically a short term rental.

Thank you Dingus,  BrokenHeadPole, and ECU Pirate.  Good insight into the sport/business ! Appreciate the input. I have not owned and helped out around the barn for more than twenty years or so. Had to get out for a number of reasons. Wasn't fun anymore.

doug d , adamczyk , stratton , laterza , debbie d are about the only claiming guys at yonkers . they claim , jam , and try and get the most money for a week of having the horse .. only smart way to do it

Harness racing needs to implement the same rules that Tbred tracks follow for claimers.

If you claim a horse, you must move them up 25% in class if that higher class is written.
If not, you must wait 2 weeks to enter in that same class.

To prevent these "rent a horse" wannabee owners.

Equus, what is so wrong with claiming a horse then having it claimed back?
Isn't that just part of the gamble/game of entering your horse in a claimer?

Owners that own a horse for 7 days don't really benefit the industry. They aren't employing farriers etc...

Plus, it doesn't help the horses at all moving around every week. Most of those "trainers" don't have the horse's well being as their top priority.

I understand how moving a horse into a different barn can be stressful, but I don't see how being in barn A vs barn B benefits the industry any more or any less?

If I claim a horse, it's usually because I think I can do something with it to improve its performance.
That may be different shoes.   That may be lubricating it's knees.    It may just be, give it some rest.
