Are standardbred feet too hard or too soft, generally?

Depends on the horse,just like people that have bad feet. They definitely need daily care.

 It also depends on the horse and what they are used for. 
For a stallion you want them to be nice and hard all the time, they also say that black ones are usually a lot harder while white ones tend to be more soft.
If you have a  filly they can be a little more soft and moist. Either way you can find a nice cream and massage it in really well. ...it will pay off in the long run.
