friendship in racing good or bad
« on: October 30, 2025, 07:07:33 AM »
I watched an interview with larry Bird and he was asked why the big decline in Basketball and he said that he never talked with Magic Johnson when he played as he did not like him and he was the enemy he had to beat and he talked about the rivalry between teams in the NBA and i know even though he never mentioned the pistons they were good for the game as they played as hard and dirty as you could to win,         In horse racing i remember when BILL GALE and Doug brown had wars and that was great for racing and how David Smiths insane speed driving made racing fun to watch and you just have to look at boxing and when you see a round were to boxers are just feeling each other out with no action the crowd will boo the shit out of them as they want action something thats dead in harness racing

Bird and Magic had very unique relationship. Just watch "Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals." It's an amazing story. Anyway, here, this is a tough one, LOL. Absent any friendship, they are all hired guns. They have to be competitive, vie for business, compete for business, and of course compete on the track. But, they also have to see each other and co-exist with each other in the room. So, some are friends, some are not, LOL. I guess to some extent and in some ways, it's similar to any other similar business environment. There are some very strong friendships there, but they are still competitors. Some socialize, travel together, and so on.

Yes, Doug Brown and Bill Gale were fierce competitors. They did go to war a few times, LOL. But, they also respected each other's talent, ability, etc. There were times they didn't like each other, but with those two that was to be expected, LOL. There was a time when Bill was the go-to driver for Bob McIntosh, and Doug was go-to for Stew Firlotte. Bob had a nice 2yo and whatever the circumstances were, Doug got the call. Well, that didn't play out to well, LOL.

I guess it's good to have friends in harness racing for those times you forget your syringes at home and need to borrow one.

You are good at finding things online and i am not but there is a video with Gary stevens and Jerry Bailey were both jockeys talk about not having any friendships with other jockeys as they did not want to owe any jockey a favor and both said they nodded at each other and are good friends after been retired but friends do not place inquirys against each other and move over for the other jockey or driver,     Even FRANKY DETTORI and MIKE SMITH who are best of friends tell a story about FRANKY living with MIKE and FRANKY had a horse that was all done but when Mike yelled move over he did not and i really loved that story and it is also on you tube.

A gazillion years ago.
As Denny Henert leads his horse to the racetrack he tells his catch driver (Busse) "If you want to make friends out there GET A DOG INSTEAD".
I am just an old horse trainer still going around in circles. Sometimes Fast. Sometimes Half-Fast.
