It's pretty simple moron, there were two options, vote to keep government open, or vote to close government! Republicans don't have 60 votes, so democraps had to help. Democraps said no, shut it down!
Sadly, only three Dems sided with the GOP for the "clean" continuing resolution to keep the government open. That made the vote 5 short of the 60 needed. It's always a gamble for each side when the government shuts down. But this now allows the administration to reduce the size of government even further. This was a bad play for the Dems whichever way they went.
When the Democrats held the majority under President Biden, Congress passed 13 continuing resolutions to keep the government open. There are videos of Sen. Schumer suggesting the government should NEVER shut down no matter the reason. Sadly, he is being "held hostage" by the far left of his party.

You are 100% right. There are millions of American children who have food insecurity. Spend that money on our citizens in need. If you want to live here, come in legally. Like my grandparents did. Through Ellis Island. Not running across the Rio Grande in the middle of the night. I have a lot of empathy for folks fleeing these countries. But do it legally. The right way.

Because of the filibuster rule in the Senate, this bill needs 60 votes to pass or the government shuts down. 52 Republicans voted to keep government open, the bill needed 8 democrat votes of their 45 members. 3 voted to keep government open, 42 voted to shut government down.
