I know he has called 754,873 races. Who really gives a shit how many but he likes to make a point of it. Listening to his race calls at MVG has been rough. Not the screaming BS that he is known for but the confusion, stumbling of words. Yes, I'm fully aware he is 94yrs old.
-
He's 81 .There's no 'O' in his last name and yes he sucks. tmbz1
-
It's a tough job and he has some of the best race calls of all time. 2 reasons you still hear him are: nobody else can or will do it and Roger still has more talent and knowledge than anybody else available even at 81.
-
Roger is a Hall of Famers you guys never will be.
-
I though he was retired ?
But yet he appears at all these different tracks --- Are tracks calling him ? Hey Roger we need a guest race caller !!
Or does he show up at the door step ?
-
I thought he got fired from Meadows? Wouldn't keep his rings off women. Only time I like Roger Houston calls is Delaware fair week. But listening to him at Miami Valley gaming the last few days you definitely can see a major decline. Missed calls, calling wrong horse, anything close at the finish line he gets all F'D up.
-
He was a mumbling and stumbling race caller 30 years ago. He's just worse now.
-
He likes quantity over quality. He has been terrible for years, he needs the money to pay his training bills to Atlmeyer. He is an egotistical asshole, if ya don't know it, you never talked to him.
-
I always thought Roger was really annoying. Phil Georgeff in Chicago was much better. Rest his soul.

This is acccurate tmbz1
not to mention all his mistakes and absurd screaming
50 years of his nonsense is enough

True, I once gave him a compliment in the 90's and instead of a thank you he gave me a dirty look.

How could you POSSIBLY compliment him ?

That was over 30 years ago, back then he called a good race.
-
How many of you guys have ever tried to call a race, record yourself then play it back.
-
I think 'most' would agree with that. I think we can 'all' agree though, you don't try and do it when you're 81. 11.wp
-
Name someone that wants to call races but can't because Roger is hogging all the work?
-
Speaks to harness racing in general 'NOT' the quality of his calls.
-
Roger is better than Barry Vicroy ngc3 ngc3
-
Obviously, he's much older, well beyond his prime (whether you think he had one or not), and whether you like him or not (his race calls), the man is a legend in the sport. I am sure plenty of people never liked his race calls, but he's still a legend. Period.
-
Whether it is Trump or Biden as the next President both will be in their 80s during their term. That’s ok but Roger at 81 is too old to call a dumb harness race? Listen I have never been a fan of Roger’s style but let’s have a little respect for those who are functioning quite well in their 80s nowadays.

Inaccurate screaming for 50 years makes him a legend?
I once owned VHS tapes from the Little Brown Jug from decades ago--he was just as horrible then as now

That is a fact, butchering calls is nothing new. Listen to the Jugette calls too. He is a JOKE, stop the sentimental bull shit. If he loved the game as much as he says he does, he'd step aside. Let him call fairs all summer. He needs to turn the mike over to someone else. Do it graciously. NOT like the egotisticai asshole he is.
-
rodger ruined racing at themeadows for 30 years ,heis the reason nobody bets that track

Perfectly stated.
-
Totally agree, he's ruining Delaware too.
-
Fuck Roger Huston. Unlistenable hack, legend in his own mind. As far as I can tell, he went from super obnoxious and somewhat competent to an incompetent screaming caricature of his prior self.

Barry is actually a good caller. His calls are accurate. But here lately he has not been so entertaining so to speak. Rumor is that he gets on Pornhub between races.

Is that a problem?
-
You guys are funny, harness racing is headed for the shitter and it sure ain't because of Roger. All the drugs, abuse, corruption from the breeders, racing commissions, vets etc... is why. And after all that garbage nobody wants to watch the same driver/trainer dominate every long drawn out race card week after week.
-
That is exactly what he did, Dave Palone, and himself!!! He is and will always be a egotistical jerk. If you ever had a conversation with him you'dknow. He ruined the meadows.
-
Like his calls or not, like him or not, here's what I think.....the guy could walk into any track, anywhere in the US, probably the world, ask to speak with someone in virtually any department at the track -- and unless he was truly an real piece of sh!t in how he treated them, which I've never seen -- they would give him a box, a table, accommodate him, and he would be treated with reverence, courtesy, professional regard, and esteem. He has recognition, standing, and stature, in our sport. That's more than I can say about any one here. Sure, maybe he is a jerk to a fan, even some. Many are. So what. Maybe his standing doesn't make him a legend, but it certainly doesn't make him what some are making him out to be. Little Andy once said "we mock what we don't understand, especially at the track."
-
Well said and written. Give him a table, hospitality.etc. Certainly well deserved and earned.
What I'm saying and think many would echo is: Just don't give him a mic anymore. 11.wp
-
Well, then who ya gonna give the mic to? Ain't no new faces looking at harness racing as something with a future.
