19 horses before Great White reared up and fell over and Jock Alex Achard making a great move to not get squashed...
At 40 seconds...

That was sad for the big guy, just a beautiful big grey horse and jock where this derby was his first!
18 horses tmbz1
Jose Ortiz / Golden Tempo gave one of the greatest rides ever - just as he's about to get squashed at the start he squeezes out of it, pulls back to last and sits 18th to the 3/4 pole and navigates an amazing victory. Not flawless as he slams his bro and Renegade in the stretch.
No (public) inquiry (and no objections) in the race, lol could of been dozens. In the stretch alone lmao. ngc3
Renegade is durable, hands down the best horse, and best horse who didn't win for the amount of punishment and body brutality he took from start to finish, hit so hard at the beginning of the race with the momentum of not one but a half dozen horses of impact. Heart of a beast!
Ocelli is a non winner of 7 races, still a maiden with earnings now of $609,800 ngc3
Incredibolt is a real deal, pummeled in the stretch (and pin-balled twice at the start) and still gliding rapidly faster than anyone once untangled.
Danon Bourbon, tough, took early punishment and still floated to the lead, lost by 0.55 seconds, wilted to 5th.
Awful ride on Pavlovian by Edwin Maldonado, clean break and rated horse to go 6-7 wide around first turn instead of jetting. Speed on tap to pull this stunt, I think the last time the horse and jockey will be paired. Finished dead last, final time 210.55!
Now with the head on replay...Commandm ent and Emerging Market, have no excuses. So Happy caused pin-balling and suffered. Further Ado got squashed, beginning and stretch, real bad. Sorry to see JV even have to use the whip.
No one hit the high 5, $1,177,720 wagered $848,360 carryover.
Future pool exactas paid between $165.86 - 1,571.74, win from $4.58 - $74.90.

I'll never forgive myself for jumping off GT to DB angbk jk ngc3
JT, has great instincts (that I usually follow angbk ), said before the start, box the top 5 jocks, 30 bux took down a $5k+ tri.
T O Elvis goes in every virtual stable, 108 E speed figure. Was a big star on the card!
Congratulations to all the winning Plop cappers! hvc.1
Until Saturday, May 1, 2027....be well, and let's do this again! ;D

Jinxing believer ngc3 stop lol!
For a fast track, the time wasn't mind blowing. Something to remember, a win is a win. I'd love to see the vet report on all the horses, I hope not but it wouldn't surprise me if they were bruised up - it was brutal!

Pretty much spot on assessment. Incredibolt was the longshot I used on my tickets. He was coming in the stretch and got wiped out, probably not a winner, but would have gotten a piece. I faded the Florida Derby runners, which was mostly the right decision. Chief Wallabe looked the best of them. He was stuck behind a wall of horses at the top of the stretch, finally got through and then got smashed into and still rallied for 4th. I watched Emerging Market when the race was live..because I had him and Renegade boxed. Perfect stalking trip, a path opened for him in the stretch and he didn't have the juice. Renegade ran a huge race. It played out how I thought with him, going to the back and coming from the clouds. I think the colder weather contributed to the slower time. Last thought..very doubtful for a Triple Crown winner this year. In the Preakness you can't come from that far back and win. Golden tempo wasn't even on the screen at the 4f point lol

I wouldn’t be surprised if the winner of the Pat Day Stakes, Crude Velocity, goes in the Preakness. 1:33:87 for 1 turn mile vs 2:02:27 for the 2 turn 1 1/4 mile. That’s 28:4 seconds difference.

Great recap! A fun day yesterday!

I am pretty sure Trigger mentioned in the shout out section yesterday that maybe he should have been in the Derby.Totally agree with ya Dingus. When I watched his 2nd race at Santa Anita won in 114 at 6.5f without being asked, I was sold on him. He's got wicked speed. Could he last at Pimlico with the extra distance is the question?

I saved my bet for Renegade. Just win. Dougie, I wish I bet place like you yesterday but I dont think I ever made a place bet.
How a horse can get slammed loke him and still race his heart out is amazing.
IMO he is by far the best 3 yr old racing and I look forward to his next race and I will be pounding him. Had to leave the the thread yesterday. hope you boys did ok.
Regarding the Deveaux family, really glad for Cherie. She is a genuine horse lover.
What is amazing is she comes from a family with Kenny, the biggest whipper abuser I ever saw. Horses he drove would come back to the paddock at Monti with bloody whip slashes and welts. Not sure where he is these days.
Jimmy was only a bit better. But he seems to have stopped the slashing for the last few years.

Over the years, i've made some big hits on my place bets. I was amazed he paid $7.14 to Place. A lot of crazy money pouring through those pools yesterday. I met a guy yesterday who bet $500 to place on #16 Pavlovian looking to cash a big ticket.

did anyone notice the last flash drop on the Japan horse Elvis ho i think that's the name 12-1 t0 5 that's a lot of Yen!
-
Exciting race :
From last to first by the winner Golden Tempo.
From mugged at the start to second for Renegade.
From AE to third for Ocelli.
Three amazing performances.
-
Excellent review by Trigger.
It ended up being a closers race. If bumping didn’t happen to Renegade and was closer might have hurt his chances. The best closer won the race.
-
Thanks fellas, I'm sure there is plenty to add to the race recap tmbz1

It was mentioned on the NBC telecast. With such a huge handle it is incredible to think of the amount that must have been bet for the odds to move that drastically.

12/1 gate
5/1 wire
Last Click cycle $950,000 bet total
Last Click cycle $400,000 bet on winner.
About 45% of the last Click cycle was bet on the winner.
In an 11 horse field.
Plus whatever happened in the ex, TRI, etc...
-
Using DRF Formulator, in the time it takes any of us to click on a line, call up and look at a replay on a race line, the CAW computers have done the same thing 1,000 times. Every race line for every horse on the card.
-
I won't say Crude Velocity is the new Flightline but if just once he doesn't break slow, we will find out.
-
Ocelli -$12k yearling buy- had the lead 110 yards from the wire and came within 1 length of winning the Derby as a maiden
-
Flightline is banging the top earning babes, should be real interesting to see his progeny.
T O Elvis carrying 123 had a better race than Crude Velocity carrying 118, even with the shorter. Last furlong in under 12, and had a ton left.
-
Cherie Devaux, the only female trainer who has won a Kentucky Derby, is sister of Jim Deveaux..yes that Jim Deveaux

Here's 60 yo Mike Smith (#8 So Happy) - wiping out the 7 horses inside him in the first 5 seconds of the race.

I thought he was a interesting outsider and neary keeled over when i saw what he went off at. In my younger days I would have caught that real time and made some $$. It takes a shit ton of cash to drop a horse from 12-1 to 5-1 on Derby Day. And they keyed on certain exactas and daily doubles. Big, big score. There was a similar drop in the last race on the winner who was double digits most of the betting and went off at 6-1.
My lesson learned is next year I will spend as much time watching the odds board as reeding the PPs. Most races if you were dead on the board you were dead period. Except for the Derby. Winner was 8th best coming in by my way of reckoning but was iive...but I tell you what besides as part of a part wheeled trifecta I could have bet thousands and would not have had the maiden hit the board.
The comments in this thread have been spot on there are several horses who were impressive and may be live in the Preakness...but most will not make it to the gate for one reason or another. Final time was weak considering the hot pace, and I would not be surprised if two pieces of the Preakness trifecta are from horses that did not run in the Derby.
-
very valid calhoun
perhaps 60 is a little old to be trying to control a thoroughbred
dont care how good a shape you are in ,reflexes go and strength declines
that was dangerous given they still have a real hub rail and the other jocks really had to grab up on their horses
-
Will the derby winner enter in the Preakness?
I say no...

Nice post Hambo. The lesson I learned is that it's a jockeys race. Bitter Truth mentioned it earlier in the week. And then you look at the jockeys that finished in the top 4. Sometimes we overanalize a horses form and past performances, when in reality, sometimes just going back to the basics is the right thing to do. Same for harness racing.. I would never of had the AE in my exotics as well... but it was Gafflione I believe that finished 3rd

I would say yes.. but will not win... might not even finish in the top 3.
