Its not gonna die dont worry! I've been hearing that nonsense for 35 years! ngc3

35 years? Look back at what it was 35 years ago. So, maybe death is premature but stage 4 cancer is more accurate.

That’s more accurate. The end isn’t tomorrow, but the writing is on the wall!

Explain what the industry looks like when the states have a budget crisis and have a choice between raising taxes or diverting the handouts to racing.

Great analogy. I just turned 50 last year. I remember as a teenager and in my twenties having to make a reservation weeks in advance to sit in the massive grandstand at Scioto. Now with a new grandstand which is much smaller you can sit anywhere you want on a Saturday night. Having attended jug week my entire life, back in the day the grandstand was packed everyday and the aluminum bleachers packed next to it everyday. Now except for jug day the grandstand is mostly empty. The first step of fixing a problem is admitting there is one, and unfortunately alot of people in the industry will not.

Keep your head buried in the sand. PA has tried several times. Soon as the state needs money they will raid the fund. How many votes would a politician lose compared to how many they lose by raising taxes. the general public aka voters could care less about harness racing.
Instead of funding wealthy horse hobbyists, we should be putting the hundreds of millions in annual subsidies toward Pennsylvania students. It’s time to start putting the education of children over the hobbies of billionaires.
https://edvoterspa.org/race-horse-development-fund/
“Over the last 10 years, racing days have declined a lot in Pennsylvania, the number of breeding horses born or the number of race horses born in the state declined, so the activity in the industry has declined substantially despite the huge subsidies,” Hooke said. “On the surface, it doesn't look like it makes any sense.”

They've been threatening to do that for several years which the horsemen strongly oppose, but eventually it's probably go to happen, or at least reduced.

The voters could care less if racing exists and they are eventually going to scream about $200 million going to racing. it is only a matter of time. Most of the track are own by casino companies. They would gladly dump racing. The fans are gone so racing is basically welfare now.
-
what a crock of shit this article is, clearly written by a left wing snowflake
Pennsylvania has the opportunity to make college more affordable to its young people who will become the next generation of teachers and nurses without raising taxes,” said Spicka. “Rather than padding the pockets of wealthy breeders and horse owners, lawmakers can relieve the stress of college payments on parents and students and support our economy.”
really ?? padding the pockets?? and what about all the people who will lose their jobs, Vets, blacksmiths, truckers, equipment , feed suppliers, grooms, growers, i
guess they dont count, maybe these kids getting a free education can figure out a way to find them employment or how the government should pay them when
they are all on welfare
Racing also takes a large toll on the horses who are injured or die on the track. Over the last ten years more than 1400 horses have died at Pennsylvania’s racetracks.
wow just throwing out numbers, what % is this of all the horses that have raced over the last 10 years
i understand each state is different, ohio and kentuucky in particiulair seem to endorse and embrace horse racing
people die in plane crashes, music festivals , car crashes, guess we should stop all of those as well
look we all know the industry is far from perfect but it does serve a purpose and there is an economic multiplier effect to having it around
dirty lying politicians now trying to be hollier than thou.. PLEASE!!!

35 years ago people actually cared about harness racing. They don't know. Go to Pocono on the biggest day of the year. You will find you can count the number of people in between races and still get your bet in.. The Jug has lost a large percentage of attendance. In PA well over 80% of the purses are made up of handouts not handle. It is only a matter of time until the politicians grab that money.

The industry is addicted to handouts and think they will exist forever -- until they don't. With the state of the industry right now, there is no reason for it is exist except as a very marginal sport.

Kentucky is going all in on racing and with duel eligibility, they will steal more and more of the breeding business. The rest of the states including Ohio are going to see that money and realize they can by a lot more votes by building roads, bridges, and schools. The general public could care less about racing and they elect the politicians not a sport with no customers.
-
Enough with the harness racing is dying. If it goes so will the throwawaybreds. Both forms of racing have issues. Stop the bitching

Again you offer no support for your statement -- NONE.
1) states have already made attempts to use the handouts for other purposes
2) harness racing has very little fan/customer support
3) Most of the general public barely know what harness racing is
It is people like you who will actually make the end come quicker. Until the industry realizes they are circling the drain, it will not evolve into something people will support.
-
Well, you’re going to die someday too, so do you just give up now or do you go about your life?

This is not "bitching", this is about motivating the industry wake up realize the industry is in serious trouble depending on politicians for its very existence. What happens when the states need money to make up for the Trump cuts? If there was a referendum in many states about using the racing money for roads, bridges, and schools, do you think racing would win? Trill me you are not that naive.

Facts. 84% of purse accounts are subsidized in NYS. It averages around 80% everywhere else where subsidies exist. It's fucking embarrassing and the jackwagons in the game are proud of it. Literally living off state welfare because "this is all we know". ngc3 Which is true since about the same percentage of people in the game have no other skills to survive other than using a fork, rake and wheelbarrow. tmbz1

So you are one of the people who thinks the industry should take the handouts and not do anything to becoming self-supporting?

,
It is well over 80% in PA. That means a $10,000 purse would become less than $1,800. The Jug attendance is down over 20% since I started going and that counts all the people at the fair. The Sun Stakes at Pocono has a handful of people.

No shortage of welfare in this country. Another democrat creation. Dependency.

Trump is making major cuts. That will hit the states hard. Where do you think the politicians will find the money. Since you brought up dying, it appears you are already dead. You must not have much interest in harness racing.

Two months ago there was a four page article about this in the Sunday Times. Does anyone in this so called industry actually believe a horse racing friendly politician will risk their position over racing when the public loses because of it? One vote and it's over. These laws aren't in the Constitution, they can be changed as fast as they were passed.

I've been a fan of harness racing since the late 60's when people used to go to the track. I also mingled a little with T-breds too. As the older people have died off the interest in harness racing has too. In fact the average T-bred fan who goes to a harness track thinks drivers are called jockeys and the sulkies are called buggies. that's how little most people know about harness racing. Unless you grew up with it, you've probably never heard of it.

Walk down any street and ask people what the Kentucky Derby is. The majority will have some idea. Ask them what The Hambletonian is.....crickets. Harness Racing ranks up there with rotary phones and 8-track tapes. They all had their run and now obsolete. But harness racing refuses to try anything using technology to maybe make the sport more appealing to the youth. Good news is The Meadowlands is having chicken races. That'll work! ngc3

It's past the stage where you can attract younger people. They're more interested in playing games on their phones and fantasy sports. If you gave a younger person a harness program to read, they wouldn't have a clue what they're looking out and would throw it away. Something needed to be done in both breeds to attract younger fans long ago as the older people were dying off and not being replaced.

Well, there's always the circus elephants then, they take a mighty dump.

we all pay taxes, ( well those of us that are working), those taxes are supposed to go to build roads, bridges and schools etc
the government has sent hundreds of millions of dollars to third world shit holes and the ukraine, maybe that's why they need money
use the taxes you collect properly and you wont have an issue
but somehow racing is to pay the price for this other nonsense that has gone on
-
Lonely ol' shopping cart boy shows how much of a pathetic loser he is. If it stops- it stops. You have nothing to do with harness racing, why put in the time?
Oh yes, you were/are the laughing stock running around welfare apartments.
They said you were the quickest move out ever, you never really had anything at all, kick in the arse and get out

"Nobody goes to the track like they did 35 years ago." Guess you haven't heard of the Internet and simulcasting.
"We can spend the tax money ey from casinos on education." You realize most of these casinos are around because tracks allow themon their property.
