In 2022, the Standardbred Horse Sales Company sale set an all- time record for yearling sale gross that surpassed the previous record by nearly $1.6 million despite selling 144 fewer horses than the previous record year (2007). Consignors said there’s no reason to expect this year’s yearling sale won’t be as strong or stronger — especially since the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale set both a record for gross ($67,916,300) and number of yearlings sold for $100,000 or more (233). “We always seem to have a pretty sequential carryover [from Lexington] as far as the market goes, as far as the interest goes and undoubtedly, we’ll have some very, very nice horses at Harrisburg,” Dr. Richard Meirs, president and general manager of Walnridge Farm told HRU’s Debbie Little.“ So, I feel quite strongly that the money will come and the good clients will come, the interest will be there. And, generally when one strong sale occurs in Kentucky, that sequentially comes up to Harrisburg.” Meirs said it’s important to remember, “There’s a lot of good horses that come out of Harrisburg... And the Kentucky numbers sometimes are a little bit inflated... The Harrisburg numbers are a little bit of a better reflection on what actually the horses are worth and what they bring.”

I would expect there will be several trainers and owners absent. How many others that are anticipating being on the next list will be missing ? What are the odds of anyone being interviewed bringing up the bad news ??
Breeders will by pushing hard to get their numbers.
-
Lots of listed trainers should be there selling all their horses. They will need the money to pay their upcoming legal bills.

They’ll have to use ongait or preferred online. It’s too late for Harrisburg.
I did see 1 from Lare on ongait already.

They may be in Harrisburg but they're not at the complex today. Place is empty. Consignors are worried. Where is everyone?
-
Captain, that is no joke! You are there and it is empty? That news came out at the worst time for this sale.

It will be all systems go like last year and big money will spent. NO CHANGES!

There will be a lot more than anyone would guess. It is an auctioneers dream. Selling to people who go to one or two auctions a year.
Wondering if Harrisburg will follow Lexingtons lead and not report RNA. Or bid in / not sold.

Dale Welk is complaining that the average was down from last year to ONLY $99,000! If 10% of the horses sold today earn that back next year that would be an accomplishment. These sales companies block out the fact that 90% of what they sell will be LOSSES, and they should be grateful that there are people interested enough to invest money they probably will never get back! It is just like a stock company that made $1 billion the year before, but ONLY $990 million the following year. It is all profit any way, and these horses are WAY overpriced as they are shilled to the buyers. They NEVER interview these nuts that shell out millions for babies and ask them 1 year later how they did.

A sign of the economy. Here and in Europe. Alot of European buyers not going crazy as the past few years.

Nothing happens here that doesn't happen in KY. Collusion, buy-backs, bid ins and ups, and so on. On one hand, the right product sells, but the market is certainly not completely pure or efficient. In any sale, there are some good values, even bargains. But if you are looking at a horse that various people are on, forget it. Too many times you are playing in an unfair game with the deck stacked. Farms want their horses to go to top trainers, certain trainers have the inside track on the farm's babies, and some breeders have deals with certain buyers that they will retain a piece, which only gives more incentive for a higher price. That said, I saw what I thought were some good values today. Brett Pelling got a really nice colt and so did Trevor Ritchie and Steve Elliott.

Lots of cheap horses especially today, and they should have been cheap. Some would not have been accepted years ago. Most of the really big numbers are deals anyways, AH good luck, you're starting out with a hell of a head start. Hope they have some that turn out.

The USTA article cut this out of their report. 'In total, 313 yearlings were sold on Wednesday for gross sales of $5,957,000, averaging $19,032.' ------------For once the little guys got the proper prices of what these were worth. Lazarus N averaged only $7471 on 17 sales over the 3 days, which is less than the stud fee was! Captain Crunch averaged $21,815 over 27 horses sold over the 3 days. Greenshoe average $24,262 over 42 horses sold. We see where this is heading with these 3 sires.

As long as they have 4 legs and have good breeding by today’s standards, isn’t that good enough? Everything comes to money money money today! Not many standards/morals anymore!!

Bill Pollock about Andrew Harris and his relationship with him: “A little more than a year ago, Bruce Areman, who has been my friend for around 35 years approached me and suggested I get into the horse business with him and a young trainer that he highly recommended named Andrew Harris,” Pollock said. “He said that Andrew is among the finest of people that he knows in or out of the business. The three of us joined forces. I found that Bruce’s assessment of Andrew was spot on.”

How much pressure does the responsibility of training $6,090,000 worth of yearlings incur?
“I don’t look upon it as pressure at all. I think of it as a miraculous privilege. I have been entrusted with 20 of the best bred and well conformed yearlings in the world. Steve Elliott once said that the most important job in being a successful horse trainer is not to screw things up. That is what I also feel is the highest responsibility in being a good horse trainer. I will do my utmost to do what is best with each and every one of these colts and fillies.”
-
They said he got a piece of all of them. Love to know the deal he's made.

How is a working horse trainer able to afford that kind of investment? HARRIS: “To be absolutely honest I’m not and can’t. But Bill worked it out so that I am able to share in the trials and tribulations and hopefully the rewards of horse ownership."

A total of 388 horses and stallion shares were sold on Thursday with gross sales of $15,059,000, providing an average of $38,812 per horse / share sold. Last year, 273 horses or shares were sold during the fourth session with total sales topping $10.1 million.

Harris is a good horseman. He's shown he can race racehorses, overnight stock, racehorse barn, etc. He got a strong background coming from Bill Robinson and Casie Coleman's barns. However, this is a completely different ball game. Apples and bowling balls. Stepping up and buying major, high-priced, grand-circuit horses is very, very different. He has only been on his own since around 2015, and even then he just had racehorses. He's developing some experience with this and he'll get better. Buying that kind of stock not only takes being a good horseman, trainer, and so forth, but you also need to know how to manage a horse, develop and manage a campaign, prepping a horse and getting him to peak for the big paychecks, and so on. Now add buying $5mm or whatever in babies, and that too is a totally different type of skill set. Couple all this with the owner being a newbie. Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.

BOOK IT,,Fact

here's the thing
when you get to that age ( same for some other recent big buyers) and you have more money than the next 2-3 generations of your family can spend than have some fun and go for it

The two-day mixed sale totaled $27.9 million, a record for the event, for 605 horses and stallion shares. The previous high, $27.5 million for 969 horses and stallion shares, was in 2006. This year’s mixed sale averaged $46,235, the third-best average in the history of the sale.

I have a lot of bowling balls in my closet. I have bowled the Professional Bowlers Association {PBA50} 50+ professionals a handful of times as an amateur. I cashed in 1 tournament. It is a completely different game as the level of the game changes. The same goes in buying yearlings and breaking babies and competing against the Burke, Alagna, Takter, Toscano, et al. Has Harris even done this (break babies)? Welcome to the Big Leagues! If all goes well, we should have an answer by the 4th of July! Best of luck in your endeavors Andrew!
-
Harris usually starts with around 20 babies a year. So far it hasn’t gone well including the 6-10 this same owner bought last year

Amazing the amount of headlines when new sales records are set but after -16% , not a thing can be found. I could never understand how high yearling prices justified the print and interviews or….. were good for the industry.
