Title: The Silvermans
Post by: theokodjak26 on October 30, 2023, 08:34:04 AM
I was looking at a few old Meadowlands programs from the early 2000s when I can across the driver Richard Silverman. I believe he is the son of HOF trainer Jerry Silverman. Then I recalled that Richard gave up driving and was a trainer at Pompano Park.I know Richard was never a great driver at the Meadowlands but occasionally he brought in a few bombs. In the final 3-5 years of Pompano I do not recall Richard listed on any horses as a trainer so I have no idea what became of him. Hopefully his father is still with us and doing ok. Does anyone have any history with the Silvermans or know what became of them?

He had a bad race accident and I don't think he ever regained full confidence. Last I heard he was selling cars.

I worked for Jerry Silverman as a groom when I arrived at the Big M after time at a farm in Illinois. That was my first time at amajor stable and I was very nervous day 1. Jerry was great to work for and Richie was a cool kid. He was flashy, like to try and leave hard in those days and did "the best he could". If alive he would have to be approaching 90. Deserved HOF, though like Lucien, it took Goshen forever to finally elect him.

No idea what Richie is doing now.

Pretty sure his daughter, Melissa is Mark Beckwith's wife.

Ok lets be clear. Started at 19 in Chi. with Willis and Graham after growing up in NE. then went on to the Meadowlands and worked for Jerry Silverman and Lew Williams and then slowly and with much struggle early, went on my own. I know nothing about breeding and enough about shoeing to get by. Anything I learned came mostly from listening to and watching John Santoro as he shod horses. I have clearly stated that I NEVER DROVE A RACE IN MY LIFE, but consider myself a pretty good judge of driving  ability. Breeding is way above my pay grade. Something else I know little about. I was a claimer/overnight racehorse guy. I had a reputation on the backstretch for being very serious and passionate about the business. I loved the action of the paddock and if I wasn;t racing one, I did tons of catch paddocks just to be in the "action" and it allowed me to rub elbows and talk with lots of great people from all over and learn a great deal. The only thing i know for sure, is that I don't know that much. There is so much to learn and still be learned.

Do you remember Peter Krasner who was Jerry’s assistant trainer in the 80’s? Very astute young horseman. I recall this down under mare that the owners has purchased, Peter shared the horse was a beast and jogged from an eight hole in debut.

That was Spyder Willis horse. I know they’re related so Jerry might have had a piece of him. Stan Banks had the other top 3 yo that year. Dream of Victory. They took turns beating each other in 1979. Busse had a 3 yo that year to Prarie Walnut

Great info. TY I was 18 and barely knew what was going on in those days, on a farm where Graham and Willis were together. My connection was an owner of theirs who also had horses with Lew Williams and Carmine A. when evenings Choice came East and went to Carmine and Robbie S. the owner allowed me to by 205 of the horse but only charged me what 10% would cost. He was a solid mid to upper claimer as a 5 /6 yr old. We also had another one named Columbia Lee. My guy had a partner who was a bagman for Carmine and he had no issue with the deal. Somehow these guys had a direct line into Joe marsh also and one night in 1982 Marsh told them he was gonna win the Open Pace and Open trot on the same night. Usually the trot was Fri and the pace on Sat at RR but for some reason they were on the same night this week.

Marsh was driving Tiger Almahurst for Bobby Hiel and Wonder Child for Hugh Parshall. Sure enough he won with both of them. One paid $17 and the other $19. They ( and me ) made more money that night than I had ever seen in my life.

He is actually lucky he wasn't murdered. He showed up at M1 in the early 80's with a bunch of horses to sell. Within a week, he sold all of them and headed back to Illinois. Well, eventually it was discovered that all these horses were high nerved and eventually most had to be put down, as they became crippled. Two of the horses were purchased by captains from the Gambino family. I heard later that Graham gave them their money back.

That's good to hear. My owner/contact/partner died young of cancer early 90s, so after that the whole "illinois crew" was off my radar.

I recall Brian Pelling mid 80s would send faxes to owners and trainers around the country ( pre internet ) of his horses programs. He would send you some 18k claimer of his with the name circled and at the top it would say something like " sound raceway horse, a steal at 22k!" ) while the horse was in for 18k. He had no shame! LOL wish i had kept a few of those for laughs.

Bino was one of the all time greats. He sold everything out of that old station wagon. He kept his accounts in his head. Half of the backstretch at every track in the northeast had running accounts with him. His main man from way back was Rick Plano at Pocono and in Delaware. He also had an interest in a funeral home in New Jersey I think. He would be at Monticello in the morning show up at Yonkers in the afternoon and be seen leaving Meadowlands at night. I really miss that guy.

He also had an interest in a funeral home in New Jersey I think. He would be at Monticello in the morning show up at Yonkers in the afternoon and be seen leaving Meadowlands at night. I really miss that guy.
You mentioned Rick Plano in your reply. I last saw him at Pompano before it closed forever. The man could barely walk yet he is still training and driving. I think he is 72 years old racing against the much younger group of drivers at Harrah’s Hoosier. I don’t know Plano personally but what makes him want to keep driving in his condition and with some decent, younger catch drivers available to him?

The double digit mutuals that keep reoccurring when he wins alot of the time. There is no feel like your own feel, when you want to know if your horse is good or not! The same thing applies for soundness issues! 🤑🤑

Plano's son Luke is a pretty good driver if he needed help. Rick has been at this for more than 50 years. I don't think that he knows anything else. He was winning races at Harrington and Pocono racing for $800 or $1000.

I've had both hips replaced and I walk semi-fine.

Rick wanted his son to join him, but he married a valley girl, and she wants him in California. You know the three greatest forces in the world are wind water and women and women on top of the first two.

Not much of a choice as to where to live. The LA valley area or Anderson, Indiana.

And the answer is--How much money do you want to make--purse money and/or betting?
