Title: Charlie Fitzpatrick
Post by: Lar4400 on August 20, 2023, 08:09:55 PM
Good guy who raced for Glasser pops when Meadowlands opened.
Had a nice stable. Anyone remember him?
HOF? Or no way?

I thought Ralph Baldwin was Speedy Scot?? Was in the throngs of over 46,000 on a hot summer night in 1964 and watched him win the International Trot!

Speedy Scot trained and driven by Ralph Baldwin was a triple crown horse of the year who was owned by Castelton Farms because he was held back from the sales because he was considered "ugly"raced 19 times at 2!  Retired to the HOF and siring at Castleton considered an immortal horse.

Wrong horse, it was Speedy Pick, not Speedy Scott.

Fitzpatrick was involved in many suspicious races. I was told of one night in the 1960's at Roosevelt where he needed to clime the backside fence to get away from angry fans chasing him down.

I don't believe so. I was mistaken. It was at Yonkers.

Fitzpatrick again was in trouble in New York in 1962. On May 29 at Yonkers Race‐ way, Miss Chief Moken, whom he drove, won and returned $7.30 for $2. The horse had been 10‐1 in the morning line.

Fitzpatrick was suspended for 60 days when it turned out that Miss Chief Moken's owner employed William Myer, who had driven another horse in the Chief Moken race. This violated the commission's conflict‐of‐interest rule and Myer was suspended for 75 days.

The drop in odds on Miss Chief Moken caused a spectator riot at Yonkers and the ninth race that night was canceled. It was discovered shortly after‐ ward that Fitzpatrick had bet $200 on himself to win.

Bedell was unable to get stall space at Roosevelt Raceway this season. Fontaine, however, drove Country Don to a fifth‐place finish Saturday night in a $25,000 free‐for‐all pace at Roosevelt.

None of the horses that Fontaine, Fitzpatrick and Bedell train will be eligible to race until the hearings are over. Country Don is entered in a $15,000 race at Liberty Bell tonight. The horse, trained by Jay QuesnelI, will be driven by Augie Galentine.

Great guy, great stories. The things you could do in the 60's great pools, most the drivers also trained. They didn't gut them every week and they didn't try to put other trainers out of business. Everybody made a living.
