If there was any question regarding the beneficial impact of the state’s five-year, $100 million bailout for New Jersey’s horse racing industry, which was approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Phil Murphy in 2019, one needs only to look at Friday’s entries at The Meadowlands.
Friday’s 14-race card at the Big M features 12 first-round divisions of New Jersey Sire Stakes action for 2-year-old trotters and pacers, with a total of 93 horses entered in those events. It is the most horses entered in the opening round of the NJSS for 2-year-olds since 2007 when the names of 104 horses were dropped in the entry box.
"Everything is on the upswing and that would not have happened without the taxpayers bailing us out, whether they know it or not,” Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association officer Mike Klau said.
Klau recently talked with New Jersey State Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin about the impact of the taxpayer funded subsidies and the importance of it being continued.
“The point I made to the Speaker is that all this doesn’t happen without the bailout,” said Klau, who is the SBOANJ second vice president as well as chairman of the Breeder Committee and syndication manager at Southwind Farms.

Hmmm and the permeant track is run by Gural, who seeks bailouts everywhere he goes. Maybe its time for different ownership/ management at these tracks. NJ and NY taxpayers should be mad as hell.

I am no fan of corporate welfare but, this is one project that appears to have met it's objective. Unlike the mass $180 million + per year give-a-way in New York.
-
While i'm not a big supporter of tax dollar "giveaways", i have little doubt that both NY and NJ waste tons of money every year on things the general public knows very little about. I love both the trotters and the runners, so if the states are going to help these tracks "stay afloat", i'm all for it.
-
I’m surprised usually they’re giving the NJ taxpayers money to the niglets in Newark!

if you jerks do not like the way the Meadowlands is run buy him out since you can't please shut the fuck up all you MAGA jerks hate to see any one get a helping hand except the very rich like Trump put the country Seven Trillion dollars in debt in his term worth 4 year term in the history of the U.S.A. oh but he will make every thing wonderful like he told every one he would balance the debt all Maga are jerks and dreamers.

Isn't Gural a Billionaire to???

20 million a year. How much tax revenue does the horse racing industry provide?
-
How much money are they making on the sports betting? Of course, that revenue doesn't count, money is needed from taxpayers to fund amatuer races

Tax Payers shouldn't be penalized for these subsidies. When legislation could be written to allocate funds from the sports book. That would be to easy, why upset the apple cart to from the casino coffers when its easier to tax the public. Fucking disgraceful.

The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey is thrilled to announce the full restoration of the $20 million horse racing purse supplement in the newly adopted FY2026 state budget—a major win for harness racing and the entire equine industry in New Jersey.
"This is a massive win for harness racing in New Jersey,” said Mark Ford, president of the SBOANJ.
The purse subsidy has proven to be a strategic lifeline, allowing New Jersey to compete with neighboring states that heavily subsidize racing through casino revenues. It supports a stronger stakes program, a more robust breeding industry, and helps position New Jersey as a premier destination to breed, train, and race horses.
The SBOANJ extends its sincere thanks to the Governor and members of the New Jersey Legislature for their continued use of taxpayer dollars to subsidize the racing industry.
"This money keeps our dying industry going,” added Ford. “We’re grateful—and we’re just getting started.”
-

You and your fellow idiots finally come up for air? Or was there too much chafing?

Ford really is stupid! “Keeps our dying industry going” that the dumbest comment from any leadership group I’ve ever heard.

Sadly some of these morons here would rather see taxpayers money go to illegal immigants so they can send the money out of country. Instead of keeping a vibrant agriculture industry in the US.

Don't be loco amigo Stan, we work hard for the moola, we just don't cross the border and start handing cash back over it. We work and we work, and we typically smile and don't complain. We're quiet and humble and do the work that American's don't want to or typically will not do an do it for less than the legal minimum wage!
You take by job and send me back, you muck my stalls gringo! ngc3

nice thread standadrbred

of course i will wait for the negativity to creep in

Once we get rid of all the ILLEGAL imigrants and quit giving people money to not work. Guess what any job is better than starving. But hey you can move to NY and get your free groceries from the new government store. Ask any Russian how they like standing line to get the free groceries this week

Harness racing is on welfare and cannot sustain any other way and you know that.
What track is self sufficient?
Sure if the gringos want to work for the welfare money arrest, and send illegals back. Fair enough.
Grab the money while you can because if and when decoupling happens widespread, you'll be the last of the Stan durbreads and we'll see only at fairgrounds once in a rare while!

The NFL is on welfare than too?
New York State is contributing $600 million in public funds, and Erie County is providing $250 million, for a total of $850 million in public funding towards the new Buffalo Bills stadium, which has a total cost of $1.4 billion

That's an investment not welfare, it comes across as a subsidy but long term pays back huge dividends above and beyond the initial investment originating from the govt!

Thanks for your input MP. If and when the contracts with casinos end. The owners of the casinos will get richer. The owners in harness racing that actually like horses will keep racing The dirtbags that only care about profit will go away. Good riddance we will survive because we love the horses

You may not believe it but harness racing contributes to the economy also.
Job Support: A 2021 study indicated that the New Jersey horse racing industry supports over 3,700 jobs, encompassing direct, indirect, and induced employment. Meadowlands Racetrack alone estimates employing roughly 430 people with an annual expenditure of $60 million on payroll and services.
Tax Revenue: The same 2021 study indicated that the industry generates approximately $75 million in tax revenue annually for the state.
Farmland Preservation: The industry helps preserve thousands of acres of farmland and open space in New Jersey, which is vital for the horses and related businesses.

Please go get some help for your mental illness from being a complete failure in life and harness racing. It is NOT the industry fault that you are a failure

We not as stupid as you think.
You are exponentially more stupid than you think and paranoid too, and he (MP) does more for your horses than many of you collectively that bash him!
Fucking guy is in the sewer, with his name out there, trying to prevent and protect, create awareness and a deterrent. You love horses then you REALLY REALLY love MP!

FYI. You claim you are not MP. So I will give you the reality on him. For the last year I have asked him repeatedly to tell me where all the horses he trained were currently. He will not answer because he knows very well they are in a can of dog food or pulling a buggy. I’ve looked at the horses he “trained “ he is the biggest hypocrite I’ve ever seen

MP is a man, a mortal man, does not control the earth, sun and tides.
He is under capitalized and under staffed...if harness racing would not abuse the horses and make the cunts who did pay, MP would probably be on to other stuff, as he's direly needed.
Because he is one helluva an advocate and even he can find better things to do than be there for the GOOD PEOPLE and BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS of harness racing which he does.
Michael Petrelli is one of the greatest animal protection advocates on the planet, and that falls under consumer protection btw according to the bible.

Money?
How many rich assholes in harness racing, that drug up, abuse, neglect, generally don't give 2 shits about their horses if their horses cannot perform and will go to any lengths to get them to perform up to and including illegal and immoral?
They're empty souls with deep pockets of generally evil, and unlawfully created wealth. Those that are not, kudos, but big whoop.
You remember, GOD, don't you?
"According to the Bible, Jesus did not accumulate personal wealth during his ministry. He embraced voluntary poverty, relying on the generosity of others for his needs. While his family may have had some means, particularly before his ministry, Jesus himself chose a life of simplicity and reliance on divine provision."
MP is a complex character, has a calling, embraces impossible challenges, shows his human side, if his only goal was fiduciary, he'd blow your mind is where my money would be on. In the interim, he dares the universe, and comes back every time on top.

Spend that money on other things like roads, bridges, schools, etc. and you get just as many jobs and those are thing the people want while the vast majority of people could care less about harness racing. The industry should support itself.

It's a simple equation. Harness Racing contributes NOTHING to society. If gone tomorrow the only people who will notice are those in it. Steals money, defrauds the public, kills horses. "But it's all we know". Just a matter of time before most of the lights are shut. And since nobody in the game seems to want to clean it up, they deserve it. Walk down most streets and ask the public what The Hambletonian is.

It does contribute jobs but the point is spending that money on things the general public cares about would create just as many jobs.
-
so an "investment" in a football stadium that gets used on average 9 times per year is okay
but supporting an industry that races hundreds of days at each location and has a huge trickle down effect is bad
go take a high school economics class
-
I'm happy the state of New Jersey subsidizes the Meadowlands. I'm sure the "Garbage State" has wasted billions on real nonsense.

My example was roads, bridges, and schools. I do not think any major league sports venue should get taxpayer money. Most of those stadiums are used for other things.

what an asinine comment
some people actually enjoy the sport
some people enjoy caring for their horses
some people enjoy wagering on the sport
some people enjoy breeding horses
of course its not perfect and there is still cleaning up required but enough of painting the entire industry and everyone in it as evil and dark

That is 100% true, and a positive statement Brown Jug! tmbz1
Unfortunately those that are not part of your "some" fucked things up bad for the horses, themselves, the industry, the gamblers and everyone you mentioned if not already mentioned!
There's nothing wrong with saving harness racing, but some things and people have to stop, and have to pay bad too, if not for just justice, then as a deterrent as well.
Do you agree?
-
yes trigger i do agree
unfortunately these issues and people were not dealt with swiftly and severely at the beginning and they have been allowed to fester and poison the industry
the ironic thing is that currently we have a somewhat level playing field for most of the big trainers, i.e using ped etc
but you can have a level playing field with no drugs as well but that entails constant policing and severe fines and suspensions
is it too late, likely but hopefully some progress will be made

You missed a few points!
Please check on what New York City got as a result of this! It's mind boggling!
You didn't mention who pays for the overrun costs on this? Answer the Bills owner Terry Pegula out of his own pocket!
Who actually owns the Stadium!
