Correct.. definitely lost ground on the first break.Once he got back on stride .. he did not lose any ground. It was weird. I've only seen it a few times and I've watched thousands of races. Definitely switched from trot  to pace and very steppy right at the wire and almost went of stride again. I had no money on the race. JMHO

Here's the issue
 When a trotter switches to the pace, it is considered breaking stride according to the rules. The horse must lose ground while on the place or he is DQ'd.

Leaving that horse was totally and completely wrong. There must be consequences

if a trotter makes ONE pacing stride it is an automatic DQ--then all trotters who break stride(albeit pacing or not--despite losing ground or not) then that should be an automatic DQ-----but it isnt

we have all seen trotters break stride, not lose ground, then get back on stride and recover to win without any DQ

we have all seen trotters gallop through the wire-not lose any ground-and if not lapped on... that is NOT a DQ

we should handle it like the Europeans-any horse not trotting the entire race is automatically DQd-losing ground is irrelevant

my take is the judges don't know the difference between and trot or a pace-so they didn't notice it and didn't think there was violation-so they left him up

was there a long delay in making it official?... or was it quick like most races

The explanation was that the horse regained stride prior to the finish line.

Which is conoketely irrelevant since the horse clearly didnt lose ground

Lots of other things to bet on today that aren't corrupted at worst or horrible officiated at best

is there a written rule that is enforced stating that a "pacing stride" is an automatic DQ?

I am not disagreeing with you-but some have said that pacing is the same as breaking stride.... whereas you say it is not
