      It use to be that 100K was the break even point to buy a yearling and race him.
This included stake fees.
I don't think that would cover it today.

Anybody know ?

training and staking will be 100,000 plus cost of horse

Too many variables:
- Yearling Price
- Staking - state/provincial only, fairs or sire stakes; staked to the gills; etc.
- Training bills - pretty big variations IME
- Transport - stabled on a track different than at a training center or private farm
- Vet/Farrier costs also vary but more predictable than the 4 prior points

In total average.. Only 15% breakeven while only 7-8% make money(profit)..cut those numbers in half for Thoroughbreds.. it's a high stakes game and big write offs for the rich..
