He was a dirtbag that needed 5 guys to go dead to win a race. He didn't have the talent to win a race legitimately but none better at setting one up.
-
tmbz1 Was given his book as a gift Read it entirely. Half of what he says cant possibly be true. never considered a "major threat" anywhere he went. His Cane pace win featured a near 33 second quarter and Jimmy pounding the horse about 100 times Unwatchable garbage. Joke of a Triple Crown race.

You know what happens to stories over the years. They grow like Pinocchio's nose.

Has been POS....

ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A BIG GUY AND HE NO TALENT WHATSOEVER AND ONLY WON WHEN THE OTHER GUYS BET WITHOUT HIM KNOWING. ALL OF THE BIG GUYS GAGS ET AL USED TO LAUGH AT HIM BECAUSE HE WANTED TO BE KNOWN AS A MOB GUY. THEY WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GOOF.

Now this one you completely nailed. Should be the postscript on his ridiculous book. tmbz1 tmbz1 tmbz1

I've heard him talk a few times. Is he a broke old man trying to cash?
-
likely
-
Whether or not his stories are 100% true or not, I’m enjoying listening to his podcasts. Entertaining for sure and being that most of what he talks about involves harness racing. Why not just enjoy the content even if you don’t consider much of it to be true.
-
Enjoy lies and bullshit? Maybe he should preface his podcast by saying it is a work of fiction.

That is him you just responded to; trying to hype his own podcast. 91zxa.1

Not true, but I can see why you might think that.
I too see that some of his content does sound a bit over hyped but it’s still interesting.
Had Mob guy Mazza on last podcast, what a story.

I heard Rolla say a few times that a TV series is being developed based on his life. If that happens, and it is a good presentation, I can not imagine how much more damage will be done to horse racing.
-
In his dreams. As Hymen Roth said, "He's small potatoes"
-
Fug the public won’t care if he is small potatoes if the show is very good. They will watch it just like the public enjoys all sorts of garbage out there. And if that happens the shit could hit the fan.
-
What's he gonna tell us? That Humberto's GF kept the path to the $50 window open for him 40 years ago or his "magic" with Seahawk Hanover? He hasn't been relevant in years? Can't see "Pass the Envelope: The Larry Rolla" story gathering a fan base outside racing people. I asked my kids, all in their 20s if they would watch such a show and they all looked at me and rolled their eyes, and they grew up in the business
-
Fug my last comment on this topic is this…all generations love mafia stories. Since the advent of talkies to current movies and TV fans just eat this stuff up. Larry will be just a small bean once the story zeroes into the families and how they manipulated the drivers and trainers. And remember they were also fixing college basketball games. There is so much meat in his story, even if it’s BS, that if produced right he may do ok.
-
Could be. Can't argue the Mafia guy fascination. I watch everything Michael Franzese puts out. He was the real deal, of course.
-
Exactly Fug. You got me thinking I should dig out my Goodfellas dvd
-
Donnie Brasco - very realistic. tmbz1

No. kidding look at the fakes on the house wives of NJ
-
They would be much better off doing a show on today’s current bs like starring nick surrick and the jailhouse horsemen. People would love to see what happens in today’s racing game. There isn’t much interest in a bust out has been like rolls. The guy was never anything. Only a wanna be coffee runner for the big wigs.
-
That's where I was coming from. Just wanna be respectful to my friend, Theo.
-
Hey I’m all for a TV series on all these crooks. A different one each week in a limited series might be entertaining. Unfortunately it would be hard to be a limited series 73cv.2
-
tmbz1 tmbz1
-
A whole season, say 26 episodes just for NY Metro..... ;D

73cv.2e

Too long, I can't watch.
How does the story end?
-
That’s the problem isn’t it? When does it end?
-

ngc3 ngc3 Well hopefully it ends the way Larry wants it to, with one final big score and dying in bed with 3 gorgeous women in a Las Vegas Penthouse Suite..

I watch him too! That gas operation was unbelievable!!
-
More money than the mob was making in Vegas. Staggering take! Do you remember all the hoops he jumped through and schemes he needed to invent to launder that money?
-

THATS A GREAT IDEA. A TV SERIES WHERE THEY GO TO A DIFFERENT TRACK EACH WEEK TO EXPOSE THE CHEATS. NOBODY WANTS TO SEE A GUY LIKE THE FAKE ROLLA DUDE WHO NEVER COULD COMPETE WITH THE MOB GUYS WHO CALLED THE SHOTS. ROLLA WAS THE GUY THEY JUST GAVE $200 TO STAY OUT OF THE WAY. HE IS BUSTED AND LIVING IN A STATE HOUSING SECTION 8. NICE GUY BUT NEVER WAS A PLAYER BUT SURE WANTED TO BE. HE LOOKED UP TO MANZI AND HERVE.

If you read his book, he is John Gotti ( minus the heavy violence ) in driver's colors. I like how he says they fixed every race at Monti. I went up there at least 1,000 times racing lower echelon horses for decades for myself and others. Never got an inkling he was in control of anything and if he was in the race, to me he was basically an auto toss. Certainly not a force to be reckoned with usually.

THANK YOU. I TOO WAS AT MONTICELLO AND SAW HIS DRIVE LIKE A CLOWN. IN FACT I DONT THINK I EVER SAW THE GUY WIN A RACE. JUST LIKE YOU SAID LARRY ROLLA WAS A NOBODY WHO ALWAYS WANTED TO BE SOMEBODY. IF YOU ASK THE AVERAGE PERSON AT ANY NEW YORK TRACK WHO HE WAS, YOU WOULD GET ANSWERS LIKE OH HE WAS A JANIOTOR, SCHOOL BUS DRIVER, OR GROOM.
-
I was also there, he was a colorful character. I can't say all the stories are true, but they aren't all false. You have to give him credit, he's ridden this for a long time, and the stories don't change. Liars can't keep stories straight.
-
I give him 50/50 with the real 50 inflated. Some lies you can keep straight. i have had the same Eva Longoria fantasy for years. Every detail is accurate. consistent and in place. 11.zq

COLORFUL CHARACTER HOW? THE GUY NEVER WON A RACE AND IF YOU WERE THERE YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT THE BIG TIME PLAYERS NEVER WENT TO LARRY ROLLA. LOL HE WAS A NON FACTOR.
-
tmbz1 sadly true.
-
Wildwood Jeb gets a 32.2 second quarter after Jimmy possibly squeezed Benny with Seahawk Hanover who breaks.. Benny put up an objection but they left Wildwood Jeb up Worst Cane Pace in history, But Larry Rolla's crowning achievement.
-
Louie P. is a friend of mine and is related to Lawrence. He was nice enough to give me an autographed copy of the book. Good people.
-
Never said he wasn't a good guy. Always warm and engaging. let the fish stories roll in his golden years. maybe in 15 years, i will recall how i won a Hambo and got a wiseguy to pay half the field to go dead tmbz1 tmbz1

I remember being in the dining room at Monti near Leon Greenberg's table.
Leon was scolding Larry, who was summoned up to speak to the owner of the Might M.
You want to race fourth in a triple race and gap the top three by over 10 lengths? Maybe during the week, but not on a Saturday Night, Larry!!"
Larry was probably more of a "Big Mocher" up in the Catskills than downstate for sure.
