Title: December Maine racing
Post by: Wawajones on December 08, 2021, 03:35:02 PM
Seems to be a good winter meet at Cumberland.  Track is a little slow and fields short, but prices are decent.  Any money in December helps the horsemen.

good for the horsemen, december racing. not helping promote maine racing. no food. no drink. no heat. grandstand filled with boats.  wish it were more public friendly. never thought id live to see 12 people at a track. even the old downs did better.  i guess this is the end.

The old Downs never pard out this amount of purse money in December or handled this amount of money.  Sadly, people stopped going to the track a long time ago.  It is much easier to bet from the warm recliner at home.

the off track handle generates 1/7 of the on track handle in revenue. purses are where they are because slots welfare is up and race days are down.  postpone saturday because of rain. really. no ones there anyway. downs at least had heat and running water.

no ice in southern maine. just rain. bet on cumberland? youd have to be crazy. wont race my horses there on that track either. for all the great press they put out last winter, cumby has made the downs look great. its the final nail in maine racings coffin. thankful the ridge is an option.   remember cumby was to keep racing going till a new track is built. well it sadly proved that 20 people is all that will come out to the track. anyone really think a new track will be built? or the casino money will keep coming?

I have to disagree with my friend yogi. The cumberland people did what they said they would do. They kept maine racing alive and they built the handle with on line wagering - but i dont see the guy building a track without sports gambling or a casino or both.

Three years and still know location of where track will be built?

I just don’t see a way for that State to build a new track facility.  It CANNOT have a new “Casino” due to the “distance laws” to another one in place.  Sports gambling?  There’s only a little over a million people in the State so there’s no way that would be enough to help support it.  And biggest thing... just nowhere even close to enough interest in horse racing up there.  Good luck... but won’t happen....

agree that new track is dead. visit cumberlands winter festival and see the 12 people freezing. thats the fan base right now.  i thought cumberland done right would have a chance. it turned into monti north. feels like a funeral not a festival.

Calhoun - maine was once part of massachusetts and we dont have to go there because they are swarming here( and the new yorkers.)  The part of the state from augusta south is nodifferent from massholechusetts.

Be careful what we say about Mass. The Ridge gave us a chance to make some decent money and even wrote real cheap TM races with high purses. And our big owners made serious money down there.

Sad to think about but once Cumberland finishes this attempt at commercial racing...  it only seems likely that Bangor will follow suit and not bother any more.  Which leaves only Fair racing and I can’t imagine who would bother own horses in this State to race that few times a year.  More likely the day that fairs won’t have them would be next... and the end of Maine racing.

when the fairs race, THERE WILL BE HORSES
Title: Re: December Maine racing
Post by: chief yogi on December 16, 2021, 02:17:48 PM
when cumberland and bangor go away there will be no horses for the fairs. as it is most lower level horses are amished and as cumberland is proving now, only enough left for 5 horse fields 8 races a day 4 days a week. if only 9 weeks a year of fair racing maine fairs will look like the few vermont fairs left. 3 horse fields. people will only keep ridge level horses.

They have done well to go this long.  They have paid out way more purse money than any other December in recent Maine racing history.
Title: Re: December Maine racing
Post by: chief yogi on December 24, 2021, 03:27:10 AM
we have had more money paid out daily this year. good slot handle less race dates equals better per day pay out. year totals will end up slightly up over 2018 thru 2020.

Cumberland did a nice job to run a winter meet.  Can't say they didn't try but with minimal resources to run a track in the winter months, they should call it a year before a horse or driver get hurt. Or someone gets hurt working in the paddock in tough conditions.

Maine had alot of rain this year.Been raining every 3 days since june. Tough conditions to keep a track good.

did ok to race thru christmas yes.  wish cumberland did something, anything, to try and promote racing. it was disapointing to see most of the grandstand used as boat storage and nothing there except 1 teller. even a couple vending machines would make it seem like the public was wanted.  had some off track handle but 1200 on track handle and no fans.  if we are to survive as an industry we need some fans and generate some of our own revenue.  the casino support is all ready being questioned in augusta. when this economy tanks its hard not to think the support money will end up somewhere else.  will be a hard fight when it happens. empty grandstand, 5 horse fields, looks like a failed industry right now to the augusta leaders.    hope that next season some effort to make it so some public attends. the old downs was a dump but did have a few people there for the live racing every day.

If you did go, you froze, the paddock was not safe, and track was even worse. Lets be honest. Late December will be cold with lousy weather. People going to the track is over. Its not going to happen. All the tracks draw less and less fans each year. Why go when its so easy to stay at home and watch and wager. Have you seen how many malls have closed or have so few people shopping now.  Its simple. Its so much easier to shop and buy online.  A tracks success in today's world is  determined by off track handle.

The  inconvenience and discomforts of actually going to the races cannot compete with online wagering.  No lines, creature comforts of home, and instant access to betting info and replays is a lot to give up just to see the horses in the flesh.  Plus you are not hostage to the delayed post times.  Options available to pass the time.

off track great for being a fan. 1/7 th the revenue to tracks. need to handle millions or have the casino money to survive.   the post time drag at cumberland has been horrible. the off track 60,000 brings little revenue.  will they race monday. bad weather predicted for wednesday. the retirement ceromonies  on friday?

We all know this was built as a fair track. Sure they brought in a lot of materials to make it better months ago  but I'm sure it would not pass USTA regulations. Call it a year.  Never ending cancellations makes no sense.

Got the races in yesterday.  Track looked bad.  Two more cards left, Wednesday and Friday.  Looks like weather will cooperate.  Over 110,000 dollars to be be distributed over the two days.  Overall, the horsemen should be very happy.

Only 6 races today, last 3 cancelled.  2:11 and 2:14 signaled a very deep muddy track.  Might only get in 3 or 4 races Friday before it gets muddy again.  Maybe they should start at 9 am.  I see Lou did get his 10 length win in his series.

If they actually allow that place to race tomorrow.....with the horrible condition that track is in, someone should get Animal Control and discipline these idiots for animal cruelty.  Not only are MANY of these horses racing on almost zero rest and 65% approaching their 40th starts of the year, there is (2) feet of frigging mud for them to try and “race” on.  Simply DEPLORABLE !!

Actually drove up from Massachusetts and the Management team should be totally embarrassed... Here’s the Highlights...

- ZERO running water which meant no toilets.. men or ladies, and let me say... the porta potties had not been emptied ALL YEAR !!!
- Food??  A box of Sams Club Lays Chips and Doritos
-Drink?  A gallon of water beside a one cup coffeemaker for your pleasure
- Betting?  One teller (poor guy busted his ass with a bunch of Hillbilly derelicts screaming at him to “Hurry the F#@& Up !!”..... and one automated teller machine that wouldn’t take cash !
- The Racing??  You mean the “crawling around the track in a blistering 2:23.2 ??  Yes... Superb racing !!

The perfect ending on the day/season was the very last race where Deslandes horse skipped at the gate... and he brought it right straight to the paddock BEFORE THE 1/4 EVEN... and said” F$#@ this ... I’m done..”. Poetic justice....

exactly the wrong way to keep maines race industry going. i been saying this for ever. maine racing support from the casinos will be gone the second the fed goverment stops throwing money around. times will get tough, state will need money and even as an owner, why is the industry getting money? tracks could care less. i used to think scarborough was bad, but id love for us all to be back there. we have raced for decent money thankfully but how did we ever let the two comercial tracks get this way? fairs will never be perfect and i understand that but think about it. do bangor and cumberland want anything other than a handout for their management? i dont think so. also a big thank you for all the people who tried so hard to make the cumberland track raceable who did so without being paid track employees.

We raced thru December and made extra money till racing starts back up in April .

So now the big question? Was this Profitable for First Tracks or did they loose money? I thought the handle goal was to average $80,000 a day.
Title: Re: December Maine racing
Post by: chief yogi on January 02, 2022, 01:44:39 PM
dont know if they were happy with their revenue.  they did come close on the 80,000 but with it all off track the revenue was likely less than what the downs made off their racing, as they had some on track. last two months the on track average was less than 2000 a day. no otb, food or drink revenue either. hard to see why they would continue to race. dont know why anyone raced their horses the last month the way the track was. yes we did have the chance to race in december.
all in all i though it was a depressing fall meet. was ok in summer and a few people turned out then on the saturday cards. wish the best but a lot needs to improve. id love to see racing in maine for years to come.

I love Maine. But i think harness racing is doomed here. Just not enough interest and the state is ambivalent to this once great industry. So sad.
